BP representative: “Louisiana isn’t the only place that has shrimp!”
Wow.

===

From Houma (LA) Today:

BP representative Hugh Depland said that while the company wasn’t sure exactly when more workers would be hired, the $239 billion company was spending “a lot of money, time and effort to bring this event to a close.” And to those worried restaurateurs facing rising prices for shrimp and oysters? In the words of fellow BP rep Randy Prescott: “Louisiana isn’t the only place that has shrimp.”

I wonder how much of America understands what an underwater dustbowl this event is. Do they know how big a hit the entire country's seafood supply has taken? Do they know what's happened to the hundreds of thousands of people whose lives have depended on the bounty of the sea for generations? I'm guessing they have no idea. I'm guessing in less than a year we're going start hearing about how the desperate out of work people of Louisiana's coastal communities are "lazy" or "waiting for a government handout" when they should have been bootstrapping up their education.

Actually BP is already hinting at this. During Monday night's townhall meeting in St. Bernard, I was amazed to read this tweet from a reporter in attendance.

BP spokesman says "we are looking into getting people some extra college"

Perhaps they'll look into getting them some courses in "other places that have shrimp" That might be helpful. Whatever they have in mind, I hope they weren't planning on "getting people some extra college" at LSU. Pretty soon there won't be anything "extra" there to speak of.

2. Actually, I'm guessing they don't particularly care.
They certainly don't care about the people, the only concern they have is our government potentially holding them financially responsible for their livelihoods. Obama says he will, but I think we're all familiar with the track record our govt. has when it comes to corporate responsibility.

move now that BP's mess has possibly ruined it in Louisiana for decades if not longer, the same can be said to all the other people who won't be able to make a living, in the spirit of BP "MOVE!", maybe we could get Samuel L. Jackson to do an ad "Move Motherf*&k@r!".

I don't really see what the cuts to LSU have to do with BP when they are due to state budget issues, of which lots of schools face around the country. Program cuts or not I'm sure people can still get a degree in another field. BP's comment for college better include a new career for the people who's livelihood they have ruined.

86. I wonder what was the position of the southern states to
Michigan's plight - reference the significant shut down of the automotive industry, and the impact to the workers, their pensions, their health care, their loss income, loss property value, loss of careers'? I wonder about the southern states' majorities that voted for Bush and then McCain (just drill, baby drill) how do they now feel about the role of government.

Edited on Thu May-27-10 06:06 PM by TexasObserver
Hotels, motels, resorts, cabins for rent, restaurants, amusement areas, fishing, swimming, boating, jet skiing, shrimping, crabbing. And then there's the health problems for all along the coast.

The carnage on the sea animals is the animal toll, but the human toll from the oil has already begun.

26. A couple of notes for Hugh Depland:
1) Oil isn't the only source of energy.

2) Capitalism is not the only economic model.

3) Corporatism is not the only possible philosophy of government.

4) Condescending paternalism is not the only form of social interaction.

5) De facto amnesty for persons involved in massive ecocide is not the only option.

6) Allowing psychopathic corporations to continue to exist is not the only path available in the future.

7) Liability caps for large oil corporations are not the only approach to extracting payment for ecological damage of massive proportions.

8) Allowing executives who pushed underlings into destroying an entire gulf to continue to walk the streets is not the only choice.

9) Winking at criminal levels of bribery and corruption, which led to this disaster, is not the only way.

10) Continued existence of BP, and physical liberty of its executives, is not necessarily something to count on in the future.

We've got plenty of those marshy shorelines along the coast here. So far the oil is staying away - I hope that continues. If at least some of the Gulf coast is kept alive, maybe we can help the rest recover.

These people don't think they have to fear any consequences, any reprisals, or any accountability.

They think they can fuck up whatever they want, destroy whatever they want, kill whoever they want, and nothing will happen.

They should be living in fear.

They are a threat to civilization, as far as I am concerned.

The country spends so much time hiding under it's bed in fear of "Men In Caves" who want to "get us" because of our "freedom."

THESE ASSHOLES like Prescott are the REAL TERRORISTS.

This Prescott character would be the one hiding under his bed right now. The sheer arrogance. These corporate fuckers have no sense of what "community" means. Those waters down there have been shared, and cared for by a communtiy of fishermen and others who realize what side their bread is buttered on and have made their living there for generations. Then along comes BP and acts like they own the place, it exists solely for their profits and anybody who doesn't like it can just fuck off and die.

It would be sheer justice if a bunch of shrimpers got hold of this Prescott character, hogtied him and threw him in a shrimp net for a dip in the cesspool he and his cohorts have created sown there.

65. I've heard that some people who have
traditionally made their living from the waters of the Mississippi & Gulf of Mexico are contemplating suicide.

Quote:
In the words of fellow BP rep Randy Prescott: “Louisiana isn’t the only place that has shrimp.”
end quote.

This is a dreadful, insensitive thing to say.

74. This is the reckless, dismissive, exploitive attitude of capitalism . . ..which we should dump--!!
The core of capitalism is exploitation of nature -- to continue with it is to

ensure an unlivable planet -- not only for our futures, our children -- but it's happening

right now!

This is ignorance -- "know-nothingness" -- and it's been guiding our economy/domestic affairs

unregulated, for decades now.

Unregulated capitalism is merely organized crime.

...and they're gonna find out about those 'other places'...I've got some Coonass relatives down that way that know how to 'settle a score'. The only thing they like better than fishin', and drinkin', and eatin', is huntin' and they can shoot the eyes out of 'em boys. So watch yoself BP you'll soon find out that there are parts of the Atchafalaya Basin where your ass will never again be heard from.

for President Obama's visit. Several hundred workers were bused in for "show" and then they vanished as soon as the President left. I am furious!!

95. So fucked up
BP needs to basically end their company as it exists now, pay out the stockholders, and take the entirety of the capital it has and begin giving it out to all the workers in the gulf whose jobs have been lost to this disaster. It amazes and disgusts to me to think about how many people's lives have been absolutely fucked over and the fact that most of them will never see any sort of compensation from the people who are DIRECTLY responsible for ruining their lives.

$236 billion should be able to help out a lot of people down there for a long time.
