Worked in the Garden after a rainy day
The spring rains have been great for the garden here on the Northern Calif. Coast. I heard it was the coolest May since 1948 and our rainfall this year is over average. After reading lots of web pages about the tragedy in the Gull today I went into the garden after the rain let up. The lettuce and tomato plants were glowing with vigor. I tucked dry mowed grass under my strawberry plants. Weeded lettuce and greens. Looks like the quail or someone is eating my Arugala and I need to cover it. I saw a pair of bluebirds in the garden, but I think they just eat bugs.

I sent some seeds of some things I grew last fall to several DU members. I still have some I could send if you could grow them and would like them, PM me.

Arugala, Chard, Chinese giant red mustard, turnip like greens, magenta lambs quarters, cilantro and Lettuce is what I have most of.

Thankful for my many blessings, and wishing blessings on others.

1. "Thankful for my many blessings ...
... and wishing blessings on others."

A lovely thought. K&R'ing, as they say, in hopes of passing that thought on to others.

13. my greenhouse didn't open and I'm scrambling for replacement
plants. but I have some and they are so nice. Gardens are wonderful aren't they. was driving to get my dogs from the groomers and saw a yearling grizzly bear digging and eating grass alongside the road. First time in thirty plus years I saw that.

14. I am , alas, not a gardener ...
... which is probably why I am in awe of those who are.

May your blooms be many, and your blessings be more so.

2. Our garden is a great comfort to both of us
Especially during rough times like these.

And we are both enjoying the long rainy season. (Lake County calif.)

Thank you for your lovely post.

3. Your seeds are growing in our garden,
and in our greenhouse. They are doing well! We have not moved our tomatoes out of the greenhouse as we have also had way too much rain here Washington. My carrots, peas, radishes and all our berries are thriving even with so much rain.

I listened to all the news this afternoon about the Gulf, too. I took several breaks from working in the studio to walk out to the garden. I was glad to watch Obama's press conference. Looks like he is not going to take any more B.S. with B.P.

Thanks again for the seed exchange. Your card and seed collection goes into my list of Favorite Things!

Blessings,

S

4. Hey, great to hear from you
I have planted some of the seed you sent, and the garlic. I tried to do a hoop greenhouse this year and get a jump on things, but the wind and storms tore it down and broke the electrical conduit plastic I used. There was the snow load too once. Didn't expect that. A few brandywine tomato plants and lettuce made it, and two squash. I have a ground cover snapdragon family plant I think, little yellow flowers, that I sort of liked but letting it go has made it a bad weed. Calif. Poppy became that way in one garden for a while. This year has been a bigger garden and I may sell things at the local 'farmers market and swap meet' this Sunday. Will see how the sunshines (forecast now looks good), and the energy flows.

Take care,
ADW

9. This little green plastic 10x10 greenhouse
has served us well for two years now. We got it on sale at the end of the season three years ago. We moved it closer to the house. It is great for starting seed early in flats. I enjoy transplanting to bigger pots and then into the garden. I think it is a zen thing. Me and my bucket of dirt. :)

Some day I would love to have a fancy greenhouse.

We added another raised bed because a friend brought a dump truck full of topsoil from an excavation site. Still have a pile of dirt for one more.

I have successfully started seed from what was labeled "Organic Tuscan Melon".. With the way the rain has been coming, I doubt we will get enough sun to have melons. I will still enjoy the attempt. Last year we bought some seed at a garden center that said Watermelon (bred for northwest gardens) We actually got 1 good sweet little watermelon and we are North of Seattle. Dang slugs got the other baby melons.

It is raining again today. Back to the studio!

6. I went out and bought a couple of flowers at the garden shop
for outside. Haven't got them planted yet, but that will be the weekend chore.

We all need to step away from the news from time to time.

8. Nice Pictures
We used to live in SF, 24th St. just above Rhode Island, and loved to watch the fog spill over Twin Peaks.

15. Let me know an address and I'll get them in the mail.
I sent a private message, you can send one back. Anyone else interested? Last Fall I made contact with about a dozen folks here, Got some nice exchanges too.

The sun is out, the ocean is calm and the Abalone divers have massed along the coast.

Take care,
ADW
