This is a hunt that targets seal pups just days and weeks of age and subjects them to agonizing deaths.
Sealers are commercial fishermen who earn, on average, a tiny fraction of their annual incomes from killing seals. Their real livelihood comes from seafood, much of which is sold in the United States and Europe. To give the fishermen who kill seals a clear economic incentive to stop killing seals, Humane Society International and The Humane Society of the United States launched a boycott of Canadian seafood, now over 5,500 restaurants and grocery stores strong.
But a major supermarket company has yet to speak out for the seals: That company is Ahold.
One of the most powerful seafood retailers in the world, Ahold owns more than 3,000 stores across Europe and the United States. Royal Ahold has its world headquarters in the Netherlands, which has been a leader within Europe on opposition to Canada's seal hunt with well over 90% of the Dutch population opposing the hunt. We need your help encouraging its biggest supermarket chain to follow the lead of its people and its government.
Submit the form below to send an email to both Dick Boer, Chief Operating Officer of Ahold Europe, and John Rishton, President and CEO of Ahold. To make your message more effective, please personalize the text.
