Obamas in Chicago: Hoops and the House
By JACKIE CALMES
CHICAGO – President Obama told sportscaster Marv Albert earlier this week that he likes to play basketball because, “It takes an edge off things.” On Saturday he had to be feeling edgy about reports that the latest attempts to stop the gulf oil leak are going badly. And he headed for the hoops.
On his first full day back home here with his family to enjoy a gorgeous Memorial Day weekend, and a day after he had visited Louisiana’s coast for first-hand briefings about the environmental disaster unfolding in the gulf, Mr. Obama was out the door early and whisked minutes away by motorcade to the University of Chicago’s Lab School, where he has played pickup games in the past.
It was more than two hours before he and his personal assistant, Reggie Love, who had played forward at Duke, reemerged in sweats, the president in his Chicago White Sox cap. Several other unidentified men left as well, more bedraggled than the jaunty commander-in-chief, who smiled and waved to the cluster of reporters and camera operators kept at a safe distance.
