Kind of in limbo, so far as I can tell.

The shear has been lifted from the riser, may come in for another bite at it, maybe in a different spot?

They may be fitting different tools to the ROV at the surface, so the shearing process is on hold for now.

40. When they gave the amended "between Wednesday and Saturday"
estimate of when they exptected to attempt the LMRP action, I figured it would be Saturday at the earliest. But, to me, anyway, it sure seems like they're zipping along, and they've been successful in the varied actions we've been watching.

OR... maybe they meant they don't know if it will WORK until then. Any idea on how soon after the LMRP is placed that we'll be able to see the results?

And, as long as I'm here asking, the "up to 20% temporary increase" in flow -- I took that to mean after the cut and before the LMRP is attached, do I have that right? That if the LMRP is successful, it will staunch the flow somewhat allowing for collection of the oil???

My head hurts.

44. You are correct. The 20% increase is after the cut and before successful completion of LMRP...
...after which they are not promising no leaks whatsoever, but are able to say with some certainty that leakage will be appreciably reduced from what we've seen over the past weeks.

41. There is no guarentee it won't muck up the works even more
Right now the bend in the riser pipe is cutting back a large percent of flow. Once that's gone the extra capturing might not make up the difference.

BP said 20%. We've learned not to trust their numbers... Also if the unknown happens and the BOP is further destroyed that could impact the relief well, or I've read as much, whow knows.

they try is risky but there's a chance we can do something before the relief wells are ready.

BP also has experts advising from other companies and scientists, engineers, etc. It's in their best interest to stop/improve this situation asap because the longer the oil flows unabated, the more $$$ they'll have to pay. They've got incentive to get it right and try any feasible solution.

Why do you think this is riskier?

EDIT -- oops, I read your second post first. Now I understand why you feel this might be a worse problem. Gotta think on this a while.

Duct tape is for ducts, and, well, kidnappings?

The tape they use is some serious shit, more akin to gaffer's tape.

If they plan to remove all four peripheral pipes before using the shear, we may not see that action til after dark.

And the diamond wire saw some time tomorrow.

65. Just want to drop these two image in for any newcomers.
Right now they're using diamond circular saws to cut away pipes that are not the primary riser pipe.

They seem to have to cut away these peripheral pipes before they can snip the riser with the 46,000 pound shear.

The shear to cut off the riser:

Then they'll use a diamond wire saw to cut off the riser in the horizontal plane just above the BOP:

Interested parties can learn about the whole process by watching this video: http://bp.concerts.com/gom/kentwellstechupdatelong053110.htm

73. OK: This is funny...
Seeing that this will probably fail just like everything else BP has tried thus far (a bottom kill is probably the only thing thats going to stop this) And seeing that the coolest part about this whole disaster is watching these ROV's operating under a mile of water, can't we just wait out the completion of the relief wells and set up steel cage matches between these ROVs. Atleast we could be entertained while watching the Gulf become a dead zone.

76. +1

I think that's the first time I've actually laughed about anything related to this.

78. When They Cut Off The Riser In The Horizontal Plane Just Above The BOP......
I hear that more oil will gush out until they cap this off. My question is will the resultant oil flow cause them lack of visibility to achieve the capping? Seems to me that if more oil flows out that it could make the visibility of the area - even with the lights of the ROV's untenable. Could anybody weigh in on this.

Also it may be time to move this to Thread #7.

81. A few things about that question:
The increased output is said to be 20%, not much more.

Visibility won't likely be much worse than it's been, and it's been pretty good.

It'll be coming out of a more uniform opening, which might be helpful.

The crude seems to be somewhat less dense than the water at that depth, thus rising rather than hanging about.

The crude doesn't mix with water, so we shouldn't expect to see clouding as we did with the kill mud during Top Kill.

I expect it will be doable!

80. Looks like it's going after that same section of pipe it was gnawing on before.
