Oakland students raising money or 'panhandling'?
Remember the days when student fundraisers entailed selling cookies or washing a few cars? Well, it appears that kids at St. Andrew Missionary Baptist Church Private School in Oakland (map) are going above and beyond the call of duty to raise money. According to a report by Anna Werner of CBS5, school principal Pastor Robert Lacy and other men have been dropping off students in downtown San Francisco. There, the kids have been standing on sidewalks with their trays of snacks and asking for donations from passersby.

The students claim they did this five days a week, after or during school, and that they worked well into the evening or even late at night. And sometimes they were alone. The May 20 video above shows a 10-year-old boy by himself at 8:20 p.m.

One boy said he raises "at least $100 to $175 every day." The donations would fund construction of a new building, said one kid. Werner reports there were no building permits issued for the church's property. Another kid said they were raising money for a trip to DC -- a journey that apparently never happened.

In Monday's follow-up report (below), student Aaliyah Carney told CBS5:

"We would be out there like at 11a.m. And people would be like, why aren't you guys in school That really made me mad because I was like OK, I enrolled in here to get an education, not to panhandle. So why am I out here at 11 a.m."

1. Not a worthy excuse, but when you defund schools - what can you expect?

2. This school wasn't defunded
This private parochial school makes its children beggars without any de-funding.

4. Fred Phelps did this
He dropped his kids off in neighborhoods all over Topeka and made them go door to door selling candy. And he beat them when they didn't sell enough.

6. This is sick. However, it seems to be increasing. Nearly every time
I go to the grocery store, there are young kids begging money for their team or charity.
