What If This Oil Fuck-Up Subsumes Everything Else ???
I'm not going to where the entire Gulf becomes a dead-zone... I'm not talking about the oceans dying...

But, that said...

If this shit starts going up the East Coast, starts effecting things larger than we imagined...

What happens then???

And I'm NOT talking about the mid-terms!

1. I'm not sure what you are saying, but I'd love to see Obama
use this incident to jump start a program to get us off fossil fuels!

10. Yeah, they'll be praying for oil. Shove them in the damn pipe would be one fix
to stop the leak.

3. Well, perhaps if it hits the Hamptons...
it might just inconvenience some of the arrogant oligarchy.... Not wishing it on any area, of course... But it seems lots of folks are all too ready to write off the Gulf.

7. Even if it travels the coast it's not likely to get to the Hamptons.
Everything I have read/seen on it shows oil going to about the Outer Banks of NC, then hooking east and traveling towards the UK, much like most hurricanes do that hit and ride up the east coast. They even say that it is unlikely it would even get to VA beach and the Chesapeake Bay area due to the currents.

I'm making no predictions though myself either way. I'm already pissed over it. No need to be pissed about what has yet to come. Fact is we will deal with this for a long time and we must not get burnt out on it. We must harness what we can and use it to get off these fossil fuels.

13. Yep, my bet is for many this will be out of sight out of mind in a few years except

those that have to suffer the disaster forever. That's the way it works in the good old USA. None of the arrogant oligarchy anyplace is going to lose sleep unless they lost money in the BP market or were financially/personally involved. My bet is also in the big picture BP will be fine and back to making hoards of money.

That's not the way it should be, but that's sadly the way it works. Big money really talks and controls power, the rest of us just talk.

18. Then we sit back and realize how powerless we humans really are...
...we tend to get the idea, not without reason, that we can tame and control our world. As this oil continues to spew and travel anger will rise, moreso, and a sense of disbelief will set in. It will be the stages of grief, similar to how people are reacting to global warming.

We won't get ahead of it. It's too far gone already. All the skimmers and tankers in the world won't contain a slick that is hundreds of miles wide and long, along with untold amounts traveling sub-surface.

11. You might as well be talking politics, cuz if the REPUKES win it's another huge catastrophe
Edited on Wed Jun-02-10 09:46 PM by flamingdem
Right now it looks like it has the chops to be the biggest economic catastrophe as well as the biggest ecological catasrophe ever in the USA, let's work to make sure it doesn't help the Repukes.

The relief well is not a sure thing.

I think the focus of protests should be for multiple relief wells.

17. I'm afraid that since it happened while the Dems were in control people will turn the the GOP.
The public has such short memories and virtually no capability to reason.

Unless the Dems can really get the truth out there without sounding like they are whining.

14. What "IF"??
(1) Fatal wound to the Obama Presidency -- possibly already

(2) Critical-condition wound to the Democratic Party = Critical-condition wound to the U.S.

(3) When oil continues to gush for 3 months = economic devastation + unbreathable air conditions in Gulf states = mass-migration on scale of 1930s Dustbowl migrations

(4) When oil continues to gush for 6 months = international implications to South American nations, Central American nations

(5) When oil continues to gush for 1 year = ???
