BP owns part of this one, too.

Shell starts production at Perdido - world's deepest offshore drilling and production
Posted on Tuesday, May 18, 2010

Shell today produced its first oil and natural gas from the Perdido Development, the world's deepest offshore drilling and production facility. Located in an isolated, ultra-deep sector of the Gulf of Mexico, Perdido marks a new era in innovation and safely unlocks domestic sources of energy for US consumers. The facility sits in approximately 2,450 metres (8,000 feet) of water, which is roughly equivalent to six Empire State Buildings stacked one atop the other, and will access reservoirs deep beneath the ocean floor. Perdido smashes the world water depth record for an offshore platform by more than 50%.

From the first lease purchase to today's production, the Perdido Development required an industry workforce of approximately 12,000 people, including employees and contractors. Shell designed, and operates, the Perdido host spar, a floating production facility, which is jointly owned by Shell (35%), Chevron (37.5%), and BP (27.5%).

4. But don't illegal cartels normally sell things that make the world a better place?
Like cocaine?

All they dabble in is that gooey black shit people are addicted to, but it doesn't make em euphoric

10. Right. We call them trusts if its legal, but the method to restrain trade
is not.

We used to bust up these types of Cartels, now we let them form willy-nilly.

14. All major oil companies have partners in projects to share risk
Nobody goes 100% anymore. One thing that hasn't been reported too much, fortunately, is that BP, while the Operator, isn't 100% on this well. Anadarko has 25% and their stock is down more than BP's even though they had no decision making authority. And they'll also be on the hook for a chunk of the cleanup costs.

5. Do they have the latest safety equipment? Who gave them permission
to drill? Might as well know ahead of time.

7. Great question.

• Construction of the Perdido host spar began in late 2006
• Topsides were mated with the spar in a single lift in early 2009

(From Shell's release at the link)

I don't know what that tells us about the permitting process, environmental reviews, spill response plan etc, but if the process got started in 2006 under the MMS of then, with each phase continuing right up until now...

9. BP cut tons of corners but does anyone have the kind of equipment needed
to stop a possible leak 8000 feet down? This is what scares me more then anything.

12. A possible correction and - Next up-- 9,627 ft --another currently being drilled nearby
Another well currently being drilled in the Tobago field will go deeper at around 2,925 metres (9,627 feet).

http://www.shell.com/home/content/aboutshell/our_strategy/major_projects_2/perdido/overview/

correction-- the Shell's own website page points to a press release saying the Perdido went into production in March. (but the press release page is missing).

13. Well- at least it's proof that it can be accomplished at those depths.
Anybody who thinks that the BP disaster is going to end deep-water drilling is crazy.
