Conyers returns conference invitation because Gingrich is keynote
By Jordy Yager - 06/03/10 10:28 AM ET

Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) has returned his invitation to attend the Mackinac Policy Conference because former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.) is the event’s chosen keynote speaker, according to the Detroit News.

The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee also blasted the event’s host, the Detroit Regional Chamber, for not choosing a speaker with a more serious message.

“Although I had looked forward to attending this year's Mackinac Conference, I cannot support the Chamber’s decision to give former Speaker Gingrich another platform to engage in partisan rhetoric, without an equal counterweight,” Conyers said.

“There is a time and a place for partisan politics, but surely a gathering dedicated to rebuilding Michigan's economy deserves more balanced and thoughtful debate. I hope that future Mackinac Conference speakers will be chosen for the seriousness of their scholarship instead of the volume of their message.”

3. Seriousness over volume?
Well, if Michigan's problems can't be solved by snotty comments and half-baked non-ideas, Newt Gingrich isn't interested. Good for Conyers for declining to participate in such a gathering and letting the organizers know exactly why.

I'm sure that Gingrich will protest that Conyers couldn't possibly know what Newtie was going to say. Maybe this time around he was actually going to offer some serious thoughts! My only response would be, "Well, I suppose that since there's a first time for practically everything, that could happen, too. I'd be sorry to miss it if it happens, but for some reason I don't think it will."

7. A newt is not just a cold blooded reptile, it's toxic.
And it looks like this newt is true to form.

The Toxicity of Newts
By Heather Björnebo

The question is often asked, are newts toxic. The answer is, of course, yes. But never has it been fully explained how toxic newts really are. I noticed that there are many speculations on the degree of toxin and how harmful it is. So I wondered whether there was any published literature on the subject. And as luck had it, I found some great research done by Edmund D. Brodie, Jr. and Edmund D. Brodie, III that may shed some light on this subject.

Don't go near any newts, if you wanna be safe.
