Denver airport's latest sculpture: God of the dead
Denver airport's latest sculpture: God of the dead

DENVER -- Sculptures outside Denver International Airport already include a 30-foot-tall, rearing blue mustang with glowing red eyes, nicknamed "Bluecifer" by snickering locals.

Now the airport has another statue: a 26-foot tall replica of the Egyptian god of the dead.

Workers erected the seven-ton replica of Anubis on Wednesday next to the main terminal to promote an upcoming King Tut exhibit at the Denver Art Museum. The statue has promoted the exhibit in other cities too.

It's not far from the sculpture of the blue horse called "Mustang," by Luis Jimenez. The artist was killed in 2006 when a large piece of the sculpture fell on him in his studio.

Airport officials say Anubis will stay only through the summer.

No way I could go to that airport - seeing a religious thing like that would scare me and make me feel persecuted. Calling 1-800-get-aclu right freaking now!

1. I like Bluecifer and I'm gonna like Anubis, too.
Nobody else has a giant blue horse to greet them when they land.

10. I usually like public art but Bluecifer is UGLY! Now our Blue Bear otoh...
is just too cool!

Here is Bluecifer..

Here is Blue Bear peering into the upper floor of our convention center..

You decide. :) As for Anubis he/she can't be any worse than Bluecifer.

20. OK we'll agree to disagree. :) At least it makes our airport unique
DIA has taken a lot of flak but it's one of the best airports in America IMHO. The art is part of it. The funky train announcements are another. Plus lots of food and drink options inside and outside of security. Bluecifer has become a part of the experience of flying out of DIA. It sure gives people on the shuttle buses something to talk about. :)

26. It really does make it unique, doesn't it? Along with the upside-down udders.
Bluecifer is one of those things that a person would either love or hate, I think, but everybody has to look.

I really like DIA, too, even though it's a long way away from the southern 'burbs.

2. Not a comforting notion, being at an airport -since some people are pretty skittish about flying.
A public park, maybe- but an airport?

who I've seen in airports in the past.

4. OK, I know that web site knows how to put up pictures...
they have their stupid "BIZARRE" montage front & center.
So where's the picture of the damn sculpture?
That story is nothing without a picture.

6. Anubis is a dog-headed human figure.
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 02:16 PM by Lance_Boyle
The head, IIRC is reminiscent of a whippet or other racing hound.

Gawd, the things people get riled up about.

I suspect the opposition to the Blue Horse is the red eyes looking "demonic" and God doesn't like it.

24. And that's one reason I like it so much. For one thing...
I just like it. For another, it's sure to piss off the fundamentalists. Like my other favorite bumper sticker: Doing My Part To Piss Off The Religious Right.

Unfortunately that bumper sticker got totalled with my jeep years ago. :(

25. Blue Bear is hugely popular...
I read somewhere that most public art gets less than 40% approval ratings but Blue Bear's ratings are in the high 80 percentile.

22. Edit for graphic warning. Here is the real God of the Dead consuming a sacrifice.
Edited on Fri Jun-04-10 04:14 PM by Uncle Joe

This God once roamed the Earth with great might and terror and ever since has died millions of times over and over lasting hundreds of million of years, finally being cast forever in to the great depths of the underground.

This is the God of darkness and death; with virtually every living thing coming in to contact with it ultimately dying.

The servants of this God, burn it as a means to send it in to the atmosphere to do battle with the God of Light, ultimately the heated conflict between light and darkness will bring about Hell on Earth.

For the God of Light is the God of the living, and virtually all life needs its' nourishment to survive, thus darkness and death hate light and life.

Should the worshipers of the Dead God change their ways and embrace the solar God of Light and the angelic God of Wind in a timely fashion, this sky based battle of Armageddon can be avoided.

Thanks for the thread, The Straight Story.

23. Anubis compliments Bad Horse nicely!
I think I hear a song coming on!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rN2U5wkhRWc

Bad Horse
Bad Horse
Bad Horse
Bad Horse

He rides across the nation
The thoroughbred of sin
He got the application
That you just sent in

It needs evaluation
So let the games begin
A heinous crime, a show of force
A murder would be nice of course

Bad Horse
Bad Horse
Bad Horse
He’s Bad

The Evil League of Evil
Is watching so beware
The grade that you receive
Will be your last we swear

So make the Bad Horse gleeful
Or he’ll make you his mare...

You’re saddled up
There’s no recourse
It’s Hi-Ho Silver
Signed, Bad Horse

where all the rich elite will go to hide in their bunkers when WWIII hits or something?

I remember reading some weird stuff about that place but I don't know if it's just CT or what.
