(06-03) 22:42 PDT SAN FRANCISCO -- A Sanchez Elementary School student was sexually assaulted by a family member in a school stairwell Thursday, and the attack caught on surveillance tape, San Francisco police and district officials said.
A teacher's aide searching for the girl saw what was happening and stopped it, said district spokeswoman Gentle Blythe. Police were notified immediately.
Police were searching for the suspect, 68-year-old Pedro Hernandez, who ran when discovered by the staff member.
Hernandez is the girl's step-grandfather and had arrived at the Castro neighborhood school around lunchtime saying he was bringing the child her lunch, Blythe said.
The school's cameras taped the entire incident in the secluded stairwell.
Police are reviewing the tape and investigating whether there have been prior crimes committed by the suspect against the victim, said Officer Samson Chan.
