Two Minutes Hate
by Nick Pell | June 4, 2010 - 2:55pm

How many of you have woken up over the last couple weeks and almost immediately thought: damn, the world is in the toilet? Me too. The last month or so has been perhaps one of the most horrible times I have ever experienced, with the beginning of the Iraq War being one of the few things that even comes close. Whether or not it's a Chinese curse, the adage about living in "interesting times" becomes more and more apt with each passing week. Despite how awful things are, there seems to be a lingering scent of resistance in the air. I concede that this could entirely be wish-fulfillment and solipsism on my part, but it seems as if things could explode at any second. Explosions in and of themselves go nowhere, however. A political analysis and direction is necessary to make an explosion travel in the right direction. Here are a few things that could see the world's underclass blowing up at any second:

Surprise of surprises, the erstwhile Deepwater Horizon continues to gush oil into the Gulf of Mexico. Here are some pictures of what it is doing to animals. Go ahead and look. You need to see what is happening. Some estimate the "worst case scenario" (also known as "not even close to what will actually happen") is that the well will leak until December. Predictably, the Administration is doing everything it can to shield the company from popular outrage.

President Obama and his cronies have signaled very clearly that there will be no end to deep sea offshore drilling. Remember that one of Obama's few differences with John McCain was that he would allegedly not allow offshore drilling. Few things underscore the lack of real democracy in the United States than the present administration's forging full speed ahead with more deep sea offshore drilling. In light of popular rage, Barack Obama has slowed not one iota.

Oh, and by the way, BP are going to turn a profit off of the act of destroying the Gulf of Mexico. Capitalism rules.

President Bush admitted what everyone already knew--that his administration ordered and authorized torture. This isn't really a subject question. As the article under the link explains, the United States has a century-plus history of prosecuting its opponents for the same actions. There will be no prosecutions because to do so would make it possible to prosecute others in the Bush Administration, the Obama Administration, Henry Kissinger and Presidents of the future.

1. As if it were wrong to prosecute criminals, regardless of the positions they hold/held.
