Freshmen At Berkeley To Have DNA Tests
Freshman in the class of 2014 at UC Berkely will be asked for a sample of DNA. University authorities have the goal of helping the students lead healthier lives by testing for alcohol and lactose tolerance. Is this a wise move?

So raise your hand if you believe the university just wants DNA to help the students "lead healthier lives".

2. if they are Asian, the odds are overwhleming that they
are (lactose and alcohol intolerant). I'm guessing they probably already know. So, no, this seems a ruse for another purpose.

4. Are Asians alcohol intolerant?
Here in Japan, the locals seem to drink like fish, but I've never seen any drunks get into a fight, although once in a while there'll be some guy vomiting on the train platform...

7. one of my japanese friends' faces always turned bright red when he drank.
he told me it was a genetic thing some japanese had.

don't know if it's true or not.

one of my high school students died from alcohol poisoning on his graduation...

but i agree with you about japanese being the nicest drunks...and drinking like fish. at least the men.

9. You'd be surprised at the "women fish"
Unmarried office ladies, at least. After they get married they seem to tone it down, though.

11. Times have changed
In the '80s, it wasn't considered "ladylike" to get drunk. Nowadays, the ladies seem to be a little more open about it.

Silver's still trying to get to the $19/ounce level, while gold is flirting with $1250. Still a bull market for gold, lots of demand from all over the world, not just the Glenn Beck crowd.
:hi:

14. I knew a girl that was allergic to alcohol.
Half Japanese, half Chinese... we both went to Berkeley too, come to think of it. Like Hannah said... face turned bright red when she drank, and then she had to crash and sleep it off (while I staggered off to go teach).

She didn't need any genetic testing to know about it... just needed one drink.

I won't bother to spin nefarious plots for the genetic testing... eugenics preparations for a clone army war against Stanford to be launched preemptively in 2040 is my guess... but it's such an obvious ploy that no self-respecting UCB military scientist would stoop to use it as anything but a ruse, or feint, in any real plans to conquer Stanford... so I await the coming move with breathless anticipation...

17. Genetically they frequently lack the ability to produce one of the
enzymes to break down alcoholm resulting in the "flush" others have mentioned. It makes them less tolerant to alcohol, though of course, they can still drink.

5. adjusting my tin foil bonnet here: since all things seem to be for corporate interests now,
one might wonder if genetic information will now be available encoded in transcripts. Makes it so much easier for corporate head hunters to screen future applicants?

16. I think there's an 'n' lost on the other side of her boob...
"I love collagen"...

Once she's got a good marketing job, or she's working a pole, she'll get her lips done... and then she'll be perfect.

DNA tests be damned...
