I can't speak for Hellyer's theories but this makes sense on a purely political corporatist level. Once the technology is available, staging the appearance of miraculous prophesy fulfilling event(s) would be the next logical step in controlling the ignorant underclasses with religion. Bleeding statues of the virgin mother can't compete with a full-on world wide media blitz of chaos and weirdness followed by a "revelation" that just happens to cement the masses into a worshipful subservience. Think outside the box. This is the 21st century and 2012(tm) is right on schedule.
