3. 50.3 mpg on a road trip over the weekend.
Never a problem with our 2006 at 84K miles.

4. Until it speeds out of control and can't be stop, crashing into something.
Hopefully, no one will be hurt.

Toyota lied to people and sold dangerous cars.

Buy American. Support America. If people had done this, we wouldn't be in such a mess.

14. Looks like GM wasn't precisely honest about this little problem
were they? Were they telling potential buyers, "oh, by the way, this particular piece of equipment may catch on fire"? I doubt it.

They knew there were problems in August 2008; said they fixed it and the government 'shut down' their investigation. GM, though, 'kept monitoring' - which kind of tells you that they knew their fix wasn't really a fix - and continued to sell the vehicles with the module. Now they admit that they can't fix it because the manufacturer has discontinued the module (probably because it was fatally flawed) - so folks can have it removed.

Since it's a high end accessory on high end models, do you think that they might have figured that the potential risk wasn't as important as the potential for using it as a selling point?

Toyota screwed up. GM and Ford and every other auto maker in the world screws up. Buying American won't change that.

15. Yup--they all screw up. They all do recalls.
I'd love every auto maker to be union, but until they all are, I'll stick with the quality I know (as I say upthread, I've a '99 Camry.)

16. GM did a recall in August 2008 and replaced wiring harnesses, which
it had determined was the likely problem, working with the washer fluid heater manufacturer. That manufacturer is now out of business.

No one has been injured or killed due to the defect, according to reports.

How many people have been killed by the runaway Toyotas now? 37? And cars with this issue go back as far as 2001, which means Toyota has been selling dangerous cars for 9 years. Sure, everybody loves their foreign corporation Toyotas until they careen out of control, then they don't like them so much. If they're still alive to talk about it. :eyes:

18. Does GM routinely use vendors that are so financially unstable?

19. I don't know. GM didn't pay them for the units once it was discovered they were defective.
If you're not an oil company, Halliburton, or Goldman Sachs, aren't all companies financially unstable today? (Thanks to the Bush/Republican policies that took America to its knees. Please, President Bush...may I have another whack? Thank you, sir. May I have another?) :puke:

20. It just seems strange to me that the only solution that GM could come up with
Was disabling a component and writing a $100 check to its customers from the US Treasury's checkbook.

17. I bought American cars for my daughters.
But GM just sold Saab to some foreigners.

If GM would have sold reliable high-mileage cars starting in the 70s and developed the electric car they wouldn't be in this mess either.

But then again Hummers are cheap nowadays.

I wasn't looking for untested "bells and whistles".
