usa versus england (football spoiler)

1-1

Great result for the USA, not so much for England, great game.

2. Personally, I thought the U.S. play in the 2nd Half
Edited on Sat Jun-12-10 06:12 PM by IndianaJoe
after we got the equalizer left a lot to be desired. Except for Altidore's breakaway, we sort of circled up the wagons and played for the tie. Maybe the tie was more than we expected, but I was a bit underwhelmed by the U.S. play save for Howard's work at goal, Cherundolo's fine game, and a fairly steady, albeit kind of uninspired, showing from Donovan and Dempsey.

I should add that the marking on Rooney was pretty good.

Still, we're going to have to play a lot better than this to really go anywhere in the Tournament. And to be fair, the Brits are going to have to really pick up their play too. They didn't look up to the calibre of Argentina or even South Korea today.

3. Agree with you totally on everything.
I did think that Howard had a dynamite game in goal. If it had been later in the game Howard would likely have stopped England's goal. It was hit good but a really sharp and warmed up goalie could have deflected it.

4. Right. It really helps sometimes when the goalie has
a couple of routine save under his belt early. It builds confidence, sharpens his attention, and generally makes his later play (when he's called on to really do something stellar) a lot better.

I'm speaking here as a former goalie.

6. You might be interested in this blog.
It's run by the staid old N.Y. Times but it dissects touches, passes, fouls made, fouls against...really kind of interesting. When people say there's no thinking or strategy involved in soccer I have to laugh. They just haven't played the game enough to grasp its intricacies and nuances.
