Stupak threat charges shock neighbors
BY JOHN WISELY
FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER
High school class president; bachelor’s degree in chemistry and master’s degrees in math and theology; 21-year Army career culminating with rank of lieutenant colonel before he retired in 1980; teacher of advanced physics at Detroit Catholic Central High School.

In retirement, Hesch has become a horticulturalist, practicing plant science on 10 meticulously kept rolling acres southwest of West Branch in northern Michigan. He attends mass daily at a parish where he also reads scripture. And he helps veterans at the nearby VFW post.

This is the same man, federal prosecutors charged last week, who threatened to paint the Mackinac Bridge red with the blood of U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak and his family.

His conservative views were no surprise, but little else about what was known of Hesch squares with the man identified in federal charges who threatened Stupak, a Menominee Democrat, in a letter for his support of President Barack Obama’s health care reform.

1. Maybe he lost it due to his advanced age. Or maybe he listens to Beck et al.
Or just Fox News generally. Guess it's tragic, but if he has a family, someone should have intervened. My sympathy for someone threatening to kill a member of Congress' family is very limited.

2. Get up in years and sometimes you say something that just ain't right...
Perahps he didn't mean it. I am sure that if given a chance he will say "They do not reflect my heart-felt belief that health care will be provided for Americans only when all parties recognize the need for mutual respect and tolerance."

11. Look again - he's white
So he can't be a terrorist, unless he keyed an SUV. QED.

6. The internet did it.
These guys get online and fire each other up. They trash talk Obama and anyone else they hate. Then they're brave enough to carry through with their fantasies.
