Cesar Chavez---Wisdom From The Past, Necessary for Today.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rj4ya_Gyq80&NR=1

"I am convinced that the truest act of courage, the strongest act of humanity is to sacrifice ourselves for others in a totally nonviolent struggle for justice. To be human is to suffer for others. God help us to be human."

1. I marched with Cesar Chavez-
quite by accident I must admit, as a boy in Stockton Ca. He is our hero in the Valley and so many have forgotten, thank you Bobbo.

2. I was in California at the time, and all of us only shopped where the Union was recognized.
I will never forget the first day those Union boxes showed up at the CO-OP! Quite the celebration!

I envy you for having the opportunity to march with a hero! :yourock:

3. It was kind of a fluke.
He was marching in a place that I happened to be and me and a few friends followed along. It was years later that I learned what I had done. At the time I think I was nine years old.

5. Thank you for making me feel ancient. I was the mother of a toddler at that point.
Because we were dirtyhippiecommiepinkobums and going to lots of rallies and protests, we saw lots of wonderful folk. But never him. I am sooooo glad the videos exist! This one really strikes me.

6. Very beautiful sentiment from a real human being.
Sad that such wisdom is considered 'extremist' in today's political world.

K&R to keep the memory of what being a real human being means. All we see in leadership positions today are cold-hearted 'pragmatists' who view human life as expendable.

8. Yes, this video shows his humility. I've been listening to the Civil Rights songs,
and that theme of sacrificing for others is so clear.

We need to go back to that simple concept.

Our future hinges on it.

Thank you for your sentiments! :yourock:

10. Painful truth
Even here on DU (there's that phrase again) it seems many people who should know better assume that "martyr" means some screaming asshole who blows up kids.

15. Thank you. It would be nice to have leaders like this.
However, it is now all up to US.

But we keep waiting for the leader to show up.
