UC Irvine suspends Muslim group over disruption
<snip>

"The University of California, Irvine, has suspended a Muslim student group for at least a year because of a protest that disrupted a talk by Israel's ambassador and led to the arrests of 11 students.

The university on Monday released a letter from a student affairs disciplinary committee to Muslim Student Union leaders. It says the group was found guilty of disorderly conduct, obstructing university activities and other violations of campus policy.

The Muslim Student Union condemned Ambassador Michael Oren's appearance in February. It has insisted it did not organize the protests, but the committee found it did engineer the protests and instructed participants to lie about its involvement.

Muslim Student Union spokesman Hadeer Soliman did not immediately respond to an e-mail from The Associated Press requesting comment."

California university suspends Muslim union for heckling Israel envoy as 'killer'

Michael Oren was repeatedly interrupted, harassed in February speech by Muslim students

<snip>

"The University of California at Irvine has suspended its Muslim Student Union for one year and placed it on disciplinary probation for an additional year after 12 of its members called Israel's ambassador to the United States a "killer" during a speech on Campus in February.

California police arrested the 12 members after Michael Oren's Irvine speech descended into chaos. The hecklers interrupted his lecture more than 10 times, shouting "killers" and "how many Palestinians did you kill?"

Oren took a 20-minute break after the fourth protest, only to be interrupted again by young men yelling at him every few minutes.

“We commend the University for its judicious decision in support of free speech and civil discourse,” said Shalom Elcott, President and CEO of Jewish Federation Orange County.

“The University’s disciplinary action regarding the MSU establishes an important and appropriate precedent and sends a powerful message to other universities across the nation," he added."

1. We commend the University for its judicious decision in support of free speech and civil discourse
:rofl:

Okay, seriously? Kick the students out of the event if they're being disruptive. Arrests? You can fucking stick your red-painted hands in the Secretary of State's face during a congressional hearing and all you'll get is a ticket of some sort.

4. Here is a heads up, the school is mostly supported by corporations
All of the science schools are top notch and very, very well funded by corporations. The graduating students from the science schools are also top notch. There are very strong ties between the science schools and corporations

All of the humanity schools are also top notch, funding only comes from the UC system (that includes film studies). The graduating students from the humanity schools are also top notch, but also very free minded.

The Chancellor Michael Drake is a medical doctor. He is there to clean up the UCI Hospital which he has done, somewhat. Trust me, it is still not a happy hospital.

Most of the deans, including some of the humanity schools are very conservative. The Social Science school makes DU look like a bunch of left wing commies from Pluto! A lot of posters here would be sick to some of the crap I had to listen to...

If you have any questions, please let me know...

3. If they lied about not being involved, they should have told the truth..
and they should not have been suspended.

6. Student "crackdowns" are always problematic. But I think this was the right call.
