She's a licensed commercial pilot and did a great job.

2. Any thing that changes in a flight is scary to me because I have a fear of flying. |

5. Well, the announcement asking for any pilots on-board must have been unsettling. |
|
Probably would have distracted me from my book that's for sure.

13. Checking to see if there are off-duty pilots doesn't require an announcement |
|
It's simply a matter of checking to see if there were any employees of AA on the flight, and then checking their qualifications.

6. Not scary at all. It only takes 1 person to fly/land the plane |
|
but it's helpful to have another set of eyeballs up front and the FA with a pilot certificate was obviously able to run the radios and do housekeeping stuff - it was a bit of good luck but hardly the miracle some would call it. :-)

11. Why is it scary? A single pilot is more than capable of landing a 767 |

15. That's why planes have two pilots. |
|
Edited on Tue Jun-15-10 06:41 PM by backscatter712
From the story, the captain of the plane was in control the whole time, and probably could have landed the plane completely by himself, but having a second set of hands and eyes is always helpful, and since the flight attendant happened to be a licensed pilot, her assistance was welcomed.

Joey, do you like movies about gladiators?
For those of us who first knew Peter Graves as Jim, the father figure in FURY, that was a hoot. Leslie Nielson. Robert Stack. We had grown up watching these three guys all play serious roles. Barbara Billingsley from Beaver. It was so much fun, then and now.

17. One of my GF's is a flight attendant. Apparently they 'fill in' quite regularly. |
|
Maybe this is exclusive to the airline she works, but she sits in for one of the pilots if they have to got to the bathroom or whatever.

19. The flight attendant had a commercial pilot's license. |
|
I imagine she did a good job in the second seat. I guess I don't see the problem here, or the reason for the humor. They needed a pilot, because the First Pilot was ill. The flight attendant had a commercial pilot's license. Problem solved.
