The Oil Drum: Why the Flow Rates are Increasing (BOP metal wearing from sand) and Open Thread

Tonight the President will talk to the nation about the oil disaster that has been going on in the Gulf of Mexico for over a month. That will likely be the news story of the night, followed by the answers to the five questions that lawmakers have of BP. By that time I will also be starting a daily visit to the National Hurricane Center to see if there are any signs of coming problems. All of which being said, now might be a good time to talk about erosion, how it is changing the Deepwater Horizon well conditions, and why precautions about the flow increasing are probably wise. And I am going to recap bits of an old Tech Talk, as I do so. (It’s partly why they are there.)

4. +1. K and R.
It's been a steep learning curve for this farmer in understanding what's going on, but the Oil Drum website has made it all understandable beyond the terrible wildlife pictures. I want to know more than just the emotional impact and you guys have been instrumental in all of this.

FWIW, one of my clients is a PhD Marine Biologist with the EPA. The Oil Drum input combined with her weekly commentary have been a first class education in the Gulf disaster and it's ramifications.

6. thanks everyone for the kind words...
they are much appreciated. :) we're educators by trade, and our goal really is to use this medium to help people learn about the perils of resource depletion and the choices we need to make going forward. it will not be an easy road, but we can at least know where we are going.

Cheers!
