Al Gore: The President's Oval Office Address and What's Next
The President's Oval Office Address and What's Next

I applaud President Obama's call for a comprehensive legislative solution to the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico. The oil gusher is just the latest and most tragic reminder of the environmental, economic and human consequences of our addiction to oil and other dirty sources of energy.

The president is right to focus on stopping the spill and working to limit, to the degree possible, its impact on the Gulf ecosystem. But ultimately the only way to prevent this type of tragedy from happening again is to fundamentally change how we power our economy. Placing a limit on global warming pollution and accelerating the deployment of clean energy technologies is the only truly effective long-term solution to this crisis.

Now it is time for the Senate to act. In the midst of the greatest environmental disaster in our country's history, there is no excuse to do otherwise.

2. Al Gore supports President Obama in this, and so should all
of us. Our strong support will help make this critical change possible. Our continued attacks on this President from the Left will destroy any chance of getting these crucial laws enacted. It's our decision, at least in part.

One man's attack is another man's thoughtful critique.

"I want you to hold our government accountable. I want you to hold me accountable." - Obama 9/9/08

5. Thoughtful critiques are good. I'm not seeing a lot of those being
posted on DU today. Instead, I'm seeing people saying things about the speech that are simply untrue. I wonder if some of the writers even heard or read the speech. It sure doesn't seem like it in many cases.

8. Jumping to "disgusted" comments is like the Tea-Party mentality really.
We have to actually do something about things and not just gripe.

10. How much oil does it take to ship all of our goods from China?
Edited on Wed Jun-16-10 11:04 AM by happy_liberal
As long as they plan on taxing us for polluting meanwhile all our goods are coming from China where Al Gore and Bill Clinton sent all of our jobs as well...I'm not listening.

When Al Gore is ready to come out and APOLOGIZE for sending all our jobs overseas meanwhile allowing unregulated pollution to continue ...somewhere else....you see we all breathe the same air, you can't just pollute over there and pretend we are not responsible.

When Al Gore is ready to start charging Walmart and Target and all of the other corporations that buy all their products overseas tax for their pollution then I won't mind paying more taxes...but that's not how it works...with 'free' trade they don't pay taxes that's why they all moved....

13. It costs the corporations involved nothing. We pick up the entire bill through
subsidizing their theft. From the oil companies/refineries, to the shipping and re-construction of what used to be our manufacturing capacity, down to the retailers that pay no taxes on their ill-gotten gains, we pay it all.

That $2 piece of plastic crap you bought at Walmart cost $5 to make and bring here, but we already paid $4.75 in corporate welfare for them to sell it to you, then they keep the tax-free quarter.

WorkCamp America®, because your dreams are meaningless to us.

14. Alternative energy sources should have been aggressively

pursued immediately after the '73 oil embargo.

Carter got it. Too bad he didn't have the clout to affect the kind of changes in our energy policy that we so desperately needed. Now the chickens have come home to roost.
