So far, I'm liking what I'm hearing from President Obama about the deal with BP |

Watching on MSNBC now and it sounds as if he got what we needed from them. And he called it a 'good start,' meaning we did not sell out the possibility for more in the future.
Kudos, Mr. President!
On edit: BP exec just apologized to the people of the gulf. Finally!

2. I hope that $20Billion is in addition to any penalites that BP has to pay directly for the spillage. |
|
On a per gallon basis, they will owe a LOT more than that for penalties.

4. I will join you with this. |

He seems to have cornered BP into taking responsibility. From what I've heard so far today, BP has canceled dividend payouts for this year, and agreed to a $20Billion escrow account. I think that may be a lowball, but a good start.
I still think Obama needs to be held to account for appointing a DLC crony politician (Salazar) to the Office (Interior) that is supposed to protect our natural resources. Had he appointed a REAL "watchdog" with experience and a track record of protecting our commons, this thing might have been prevented. There was even a "Heck of a Job, Sallie" moment in last night's speech.
That aside, Obama did score some points last night.

6. I'm honored. Your analysis is always so accurate to me. |
|
It is a little on the lowball side but was glad to hear the President call it a 'good start,' which would indicate options remain open in addition to this.
I'm just happy to be able to see the President score an important victory that is good for the people.

7. I'll hold off on giving the deal a thumbs-up |
|
until I see what we gave away to get BP's cooperation. Immunity from criminal charges would be unacceptable.

10. Personally $20B seems pretty skimpy |
|
That's like 3 months profit.

11. Press briefing. "Does not in any way limit BP's responsibilities. Not a floor, not a cap." |
