3. Piffle
Rachel designed a speech for an EXTREMELY narrow audience.

President Obama delivered a REAL speech to the audience of the entire nation.

Apples and oranges, and I didn't even need to listen to Rachel give a speech to know basically what she did.

16. I don't have to see the movie to tell you what I think of it.
Plus, I don't know about art, but I know what I like.

Yes on both your points about the speeches, and the audiences taken into consideration.

Had you listened to Rachel's speech you would have heard her say towards the end, as fake President, that tomorrow she will tune in again to give an update.
And that is where the rubber meets the road in your analysis of the two different (real speech vs. narrow audience speech) and the potential we are not experiencing but if realized it would change everything:

We are at a crossroad on so many levels that the President looking us squarely in the eye OFTEN and giving us information and updates and the care of connection would reel in a large, mostly uneducated audience and bring it in to be sharper, interested, and make that narrow audience you talk about get wider across the country.

Rachel is onto something with her fake President talk(s).

its just another speech. Run Rachel. You are better than this current job you have. Save the piffle for the rest.

You'd have my vote. Start with the Senate. I hear a one Mr. Brown will be up for reelection in a couple years. You'd kick his ass with talk like this. Don't let the process change you, like it has so many others. But its a perfect time for your toe to be in that water. Start today.

On edit: I've been down on MSNBC lately. Not for criticizing Obama, but for being election central, rather than an educator. Rachel included. I don't need to hear a news channel show give me this speech, I need to hear a politician give this speech.

chorusing these ideas, maybe we could elect more like-minded politicians. Just saying that until we have more media that speaks the truth and more exposure to the truth by the US electorate, we will continue to elect cowardly politicians and political hacks.

37. As I posted on Alternet this morning...
The gusher in the gulf is just the tip of the iceberg.

The industrial growth paradigm, created to support the current incarnation of the latest short human experiment with a deadly dominator hierarchy, fueled by cheap fossil fuels, is now exhibiting its internal contradictions in very visible ways.

Get used to it. It's OVER. The age of cheap energy and using Mother Earth as a toilet and landfill are OVER!

Start thinking about Powering DOWN and living within our means on the planet Earth. In case you haven't checked, it's the only freakin' planet you've got!

Start thinking about an economy as a mechanism to fulfill the basic needs of humans and our fellow creatures and NOT as a generator of profit and luxury for the few. Think a steady state, right-sized "economy".

Start thinking about how much better your life will be once we dump the parasites and leeches from our thinking, our environment and our daily lives.

We have the power to begin to power-down. USE IT!

51. At the current consumption level...
there will be no affordable oil in a generation. This is a misnomer though, as oil consumption is on the rise as far as consumption goes. If the CO/CO2 tossed into the air as well as sulfides and a host of other noxious things, don't do the earth in before we run out of affordable oil, w/o change, and rapid change at that, we will all be walking; that is, if we are still here.

I don't know how many times it has been mentioned, probably 10-15 billion, but petroleum is a finite resource, once it's gone...that's it.

52. I just don't believe that.
I know you (or I) could come up with charts, quotes, and statistics that purport to show that but I have been alive long enough to know the same things were said in the late 70s along with very solid scientific charts and graphs to prove it.

53. You are entitled to believe whatever you want...
but that does not change the fact that petroleum is a finite resource, nor will it change the fact that the more scarce it becomes, the higher the cost will be for extraction and as supply dwindles, the cost to the consumer will grow.

During the 70's, when OPEC flexed it's muscles, people got a chance to see where we were headed, it isn't pretty. Through remarkable series of of events brought on by denial, most people refuse to look at things like over consumption, waste and the rule of exponentials. We consume far more than we actually need to; we waste valuable resources, but worst of all, fall for stuff like, "CO2 is naturally occurring, (which it certainly is), but by human activity we increase the level exponentially. If 500 tons of CO2 are produced under natural circumstances, then man made CO2 adds 250 tons of CO2, that's now 750 tons, 250 of which should not really be there. Multiply this bu millions, and one can easily see that we have a serious impact on what happens to to the atmosphere, and by extension, to the rest of the planet. When sulfides and other human produced compounds are tossed into the mix, it is easy to see the effects in a lifetime. By reducing sulfides over the past couple of decades, acid rain has dropped dramatically, and that is just over 20+ years, we can actually see what effects we have/can have on the planet. By taking lead out of gas, in 10 years, there was a marked drop in smog and and respiratory problems.

These are just a couple of things that have been proven in our lifetimes...there are other examples as well. It's there to see, the facts are the facts.
