Is there a better word the media could use for repugs than 'conservative?' |
|
Whenever I hear a Palin or Bush or a Romney or a Huck-a-buck described as a "conservative" it makes my skin crawl. Maybe it is the word purist in me, but the only thing conservative about these clowns is - well I can't think of anything.
When I think of conservatives, I think of those who save things, those who want to make things last such as the environment or a savings account. Let's face it, those who are called conservative in this country are some of the biggest spendthrifts the world has ever seen. Not only monetary spendthrifts, but also in terms of resources.
Anybody got a good word that could be used in the place of 'conservative' that could better sum up the "blow the people's money and invoke religion and patriotism to cover it up, transfer the wealth from the poor to the rich" party the Republicans truly are? Fascism comes immediately to mind, but we all know what problems saying that word causes.

8. Here in the US we love cheap labels |
|
Complexity isn't one of our strong points.
Personally I think it's good to be somewhat "conservative" (as defined in the dictionary, not the news media).
I also believe it's a virtue to be "liberal".

21. Nothing fits correctly |
|
as not all of them fall under that description, a first thought that came to my mind but that doesn't fit what you want to sum up is narrow minded. After that I thought of crusaders, again not all of them fit that and in my use of crusader I mean those that fit your summary, the ones that took advantage of a religious 'call' to kill, exploit and better their own lives by ruining others.
Anyway I always saw the liberal/conservative labels as being for social issues primarily and the rest gets tossed in with them for the party views.

31. Interesting point. A few months ago, I posted the following: |
|
'...as someone from a different system, I am struck by the rather different use of 'conservative' in American than in much Europaean politics. Here, it mostly means the moderate right and usually excludes true extremists (though some of the latter do slip through the net!) Americans appear to use the term both for the mainstream right and for the far right. On the whole, the equivalents of 'teabaggers' here would not be referred to simply as 'conservative'; they might or might not vote for the mainstream Conservative Party, but such extreme views are called *right-wing*, not conservative. I would describe Blue Dog Democrats and moderate Republicans as *conservatives*; Pat Buchanan and Michele Bachmann and Senator DeMented are not *conservatives* but at least borderline fascists. I wonder if this broad use of the term 'conservative' helps to blur distinctions between moderate and extreme right-wingers, and encourages some liberals to think that common ground can be made with the latter?'
