Gulf Oil Spill DU threads declined substantially. Will the oil spill go the way of Katrina? |

I was ready to read up on the oil spill and had to search around, scroll way down.

1. it is just numbing, what is another thread gonna do? |
|
Sure if there is some more news like the weekly "Experts have doubled the barrels per day estimate" or the next species that has been found suffering or dead and the subsequent speculation if the oil soaked creature did in fact succumb to said oil. Trust me, you will see those posts. There will be many, but the buzz has died down for now out of shear numbness imo.

2. Katrina came and went as did the initial cleanup... |
|
BP seems to be the gift that keeps on giving.
I think people, even those who aren't too environmentally conscious, are alarmed now, almost to the point of not wanting to hear any more...

5. Yes, but the Naked Cowboy and Naked Cowgirl(s) threads have increased 100% |
|
Scroll down a bit. Vote for your favorite(s).
Everyone needs a break. Still outraged, but . . . exhausted.

7. No, but there are many other things going on. The story is |
|
still there, and will continue to be there. It's not going away, but the huge number of more or less duplicate threads will go away. That's not a bad thing.

8. They are approximately 15% of the threads on the page when I just opened up. |
|
11/82 were about the oil spill or the moratorium on drilling. Your thread makes it 12/82.
This many weeks after the initial explosion, I'm thinking this is a pretty high percentage of threads still focused in on the oil in the Gulf. I'm sure it's a higher percentage than that in the mainstream media.
How many more threads/day do you think people should be putting out there this many weeks after? What topics still need hashing out in your opinion?
I'm not being snarky, I'm really curious why you believe anyone isn't thinking about the folks in the Gulf region daily. You aren't forgotten as far as this DUer is concerned. I saw they are trying to put together a fundraiser. I'm glad that's getting up and running....

18. Clarification -The 'LA' in my name stands for Los Angeles, not Louisiana |
|
I just suddenly aware of the big drop off in threads. Was hoping the gulf oil spill didn't go the way of the Haiti Earthquake.

12. I think we're on a lull until the relief well gets close to intersection |

Then there should be alot of drama with the bottom kill attempt.
So come back in about six weeks!

What this "spill" has shown me is the expansive capacity of Americans (and Canadians, and Brits, etc.) to "realistically" accept almost unlimited environmental degradation as part of the bargain, one of the things we need to accept as part of the great continuum of life, or because of some other fucking nonsense.
I once thought that the reason people couldn't accept the need to address what we know is coming with climate change is that we are just not hard-wired to make sacrifices now for a possible harm that may come in a seemingly distant future.
What the blowout indicates is that it is now basically okay, politically and socially, to inflict unimaginable, horrific destruction on a large ocean ecosystem, and on everything living in, on or beside it. You can even do it on America's very own shoreline, and eventually, no-one will pay much attention, let alone take to the streets
This being so, I have to surmise that all bets are off in terms of what comes next. It has been apparent for some time already that most people under about thirty will live to see the absolute worst case climate change scenario unfold. What I didn't see was that no-one would have a serious problem if it includes despoiling the oceans.
I wish things were otherwise, but I'm not seeing much by way of any serious alternative scenario.

19. BP is not allowing the free flow of info |
|
Lots of information may not be getting out. When the journalists have no access...there is little information to report. I think lots is going on. We just aren't being allowed to know what.

and like most Americans, DUers tend to follow the shiny bouncing ball.
