17. Taiwan (now Chinese Taipei, just like in the Olympics) isn't really a huge power these days.
Japan rules the roost in the Asian region. Most recent champions, in fact, have come from the good old USA: Chula Vista, CA (currently) and Hawai'i (twice in the last five years).

Right now I am defrosting my 42 year old refrigerator and watching the ice melt is about as exciting as watching soccer.

15. At least every minute or so a chunk of ice falls which is better than waiting to see a goal scored.
Now if it were little cavemen playing soccer, then that might be worth watching.

20. Soon the games won't end in a tie. One team will have to win.
So, they'll play 90 minutes to a 0-0 tie, and then the game will be decided on penalty kicks. That's much better, isn't it?

23. The last scoreless tie in the NFL:
http://www.tommcmahon.net/2004/10/the_last_scorel.html

"According to Brainy History, it was November 7, 1943, between the Detroit Lions and New York Giants."

I highly doubt that anyone alive and posting at DU ever saw or probably even heard of a 0-0 tie in the NFL, but it happens regularly in soccer.

45. The scarce scoring opportunities is what makes it so good.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion on what entertains them, but I find the low scoring exhilarating.

But I've been out at the sports bars supporting friends' teams during the NBA playoffs, and found it tolerable, but no one really watched the game until there was about 6 minutes left, because nothing matters until then. In soccer, and similarly hockey, the outcome hangs in the balance every moment of the game, and I love that aspect.

Now, look at baseball. A 0-0 game going into late innings gets pretty exciting. Sure, they play it out to a winner, but then again, over 162 games or whatever it is, the better teams will rise to the top of the standings by the playoffs. In the World Cup, they have only three first round games to figure out who should advance. The point system recognizing a draw helps take the luck of overtime penalty kicks away from deciding who gets into the elimination rounds.

No fan is happy with a draw, in any sport. You wanna know someone wins. But since the WC group rounds are best of three, it makes for better elimination rounds.

27. Well, no. FOOTBALL of some sort, possibly.
SOCCER refers specifically to 'association football'. The 'soc' comes from 'associaton'; the association in question is the Football Association, which was formed in 1863. Soccer has its origins in the various types of football games played at English schools (which have origins going back to the Middle Ages), as does rugby and ultimately American football; none of them have anything to do with Native Americans. (And the first organised sport played in the US was probably cricket; there were cricket clubs in several US cities in the early 1800's).

44. I believe that lacrosse is the oldest North American sport ..
It was a game developed by Native Americans over centuries. They have examples of lacrosse sticks which date to the 1st quarter of the 19th Century, but there are much older reports of the game from various sources. (It was eventually named 'lacrosse' by French Canadian settlers because the stick reminded them of a bishop's crozier / staff.)

When well-played, it can be very exciting. It's sort of like ice hockey played in the air, but it's easier to follow because the ball doesn't travel quite as fast as the puck. Granted, it's largely a secondary school/ collegiate game. (The pro indoor version doesn't quite measure up, IMO.)

A bit more info from the Lacrosse Hall of Fame: http://www.uslacrosse.org/TopNav/MuseumHallofFame/History.aspx

As to baseball, the modern version was codified by a NYC team in the late 19th century, although they used fields in Joisey for their games. .

36. I really tried to watch soccer a few times...it just bored the fuck out of me
I don't think it was the lack of action, but it seemed like it took forever for the ball itself to get into the oppositions domain...of course, the point is to kick it in to the goal-thingy....but when I was watching, it was more like a tennis match only lots more people playing, and with their feet

I must be missing something as far as the fascination with this sport is concerned;I don't know some people are absolutely obsessed with this particular sport...more so overseas..so if anyone could fill me in that would be appreciated

and played by girls!

Northanger Abbey, 1815:

Mrs. Morland was a very good woman, and wished to see her children everything they ought to be; but her time was so much occupied in lying–in and teaching the little ones, that her elder daughters were inevitably left to shift for themselves; and it was not very wonderful that Catherine, who had by nature nothing heroic about her, should prefer cricket, baseball, riding on horseback, and running about the country at the age of fourteen, to books — or at least books of information — for, provided that nothing like useful knowledge could be gained from them, provided they were all story and no reflection, she had never any objection to books at all.
