Let me tell you a little story relevant to the McChrystal situation.
Back during World War II, when the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment was in training, E Company had a leader named Sobel who was widely considered to be not competent to hold command. It eventually got so bad that the unit's non-commissioned officers wrote a letter to the 506th's superior officer saying in effect that if Sobel remained in command, they wished to resign their positions as NCOs, because of a lack of faith in his leadership under combat conditions.

For what this superior perceived as insubordination and disobedience to orders during a war--not in a combat zone, as the company was still in England at the time--their colonel threatened to have these men executed, all for going up the chain of command to express their desire not to lead their men into battle under a bad commander.

Now flash forward to where a FLAG OFFICER is publicly disrespecting and expressing reluctance to obey the President of the United States, the Vice President, and the senior leadership of the United States, doing so while actively in command of a war zone, doing so not to a superior officer but to a public media outlet, and directly contradicting on multiple occasions the stated military policy of the United States.

And there's actual questions as to whether this man should be sacked?

McChrystal needs to go. NOW.

Uuff-da.

Ask surviving vets, dissent and unhappiness with political leadership is almost standard issue. This ain't new.

McChrystal lost friends, made enemies, and didn't know when to keep his mouth shut. That's not unknown through US military history.
