Regarding a nationalized oil industry . . .
We have a nationalized space program.

Failures happen to both privately and publicly run mechanical operations.

1. Another deliberate Republican refusal to provide adequate oversight and inspection.
When regulations are unenforced, disasters happen.

The engineers at Morton Thiokol said the launch was unsafe but Reagan wanted the show.

2. Shit happens
May happen less when profit aint in the way. May be easier to clean up when greedy execs aren't in the way. May be easier to pay for when shareholders aren't in the way.

3. fine
The same argument would apply to public schools, to public highways, food safety inspection, law enforcement, public parks, libraries, research programs, the weather service, weights and measures, the forestry service, and hundreds of other things.

Privatize it all, by the logic of your post. After all, things can go wrong whether something is private or public, so why have any public infrastructure at all? Why have government at all, as far as that goes?

You will be happy to know that there is an effort going on right now to privatize the space program.

4. I wasn't arguing for privatization, just saying that the nationalization of an industry does not
remove the risks of that industry.

6. oh
Why argue that? Was anyone saying otherwise? You just did in fact make a powerful and generalized argument in favor of privatization. No way around that.

5. There's a difference between "failure" and gross negligence
A difference between making a mistake and deliberately making reckless decisions.

BP made reckless decisions and even though the gov't regulations may not have been enforced, they STILL were drilling deeper than they acknowledged.
