Has anyone else noticed the substantial increase in DUPE posts lately?
I've been seeing a LOT of duplicate posts lately. And there's a weird new twist: some of the dupe posts are coming a day or two or even three AFTER the first post. And by then, it's old news.

I always try to see if anyone has already posted an OP citing the same source. If it's already been posted, I don't post an new OP about it. Often I will join the discussion of the first poster. Sometimes, if I have a different take that's not being addressed in the first post, and if I think it will generate some interest and legitimately stands apart in its character, then I will make a separate post.

Should there be some merging of posts that address the same issue or source?

2. I've also seen duplicate posts by a single poster recently
Its like they didnt get the reception they wanted the first time, so they will repost again several hours later.

4. So,. How does it hurt you?
the more rules you make, the more rules that get broke. Why do we need folks patrolling the forums looking for fault?

7. It's not a new rule
There's always been a rule about dupes.

"Do not post duplicate topics that have already been posted. There are different levels of enforcement in different forums. For example, the Latest Breaking News forum has extremely strict rules against duplicate topics, but the General Discussion forum is much more lenient. Cross posting of duplicates in the two General Discussion forums is not permitted. Cross-posting of duplicates in other forums is occasionally permitted if there is a clear reason for doing so."

14. Good to see you
I like the Calvin!

I also find dupes to be annoying, especially when the duped article is on the front page of GD (though too old to be listed in the "recently listed" list you get when you post). I always do a search before I post an article. :)

8. Did I say it hurts me? I was making an observation. But, if you want to
get technical, for every dupe post I see, there is a bit of time invested, especially if you are interested in the subject. So, instead of reading the discussion in one origianal post, you having to do it in two, or three, posts instead. Then you have the sometimes confusing, yet similar, headlines. Did I read that one yet? Who has commented in this one that didn't comment in the first one? Etc.

are such a heavy burden for you, but you have no words at all for the thread that comes straight out and mocks you? Ok, I'm an asshole.

17. The thread that came out 'mocking' me was a JOKE. And, a very funny
one at that, as I stated in that thread that is "mocking" me:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=8634115&mesg_id=8634131

I was simply making an observation that there's been a LOT of dupe threads lately. Is that a crime? Do I have to be "hurt" by it? NO! So, you either noticed there were more than the usual duplicate threads, or you haven't. Right? Which was the question headlining my OP! Right?

Jeez! Lighten up!

18. you were complaining and offering resolutions to the duplicate posts
as if they somehow hurt you. So you tell me. I think the constant complaining and whining that goes on here by some, waste about the same amount of these poster's precious time as the duplicate posts do. No?

11. The mods do end up merging threads
When you are making an OP, they mention the other threads started in the forum, but sometimes dupes might be further down on a page or on the second page, or whatever. It's difficult to avoid duping if you haven't been reading every single post. The system does work, however, like everything else, it's not a perfect fit.

15. yes. I think it is the ignore crowd not seeing posts
becoming a problem

they live in their own world

perhaps duplicate post titles should be flagged and shown to the user regardless of ignore after the submit but before it is posted for one last chance to cancel the post.
