Porn sites get their own domain: '.xxx'
On Friday, ICANN, the not-for-profit corporation that coordinates the internet's naming system, voted to allow the application of the controversial ".xxx" top-level domain name for sites that display adult content.

The domain, which would need further approval before going live on the internet, would be applied to adult entertainment sites just as ".com" is now.

The .xxx internet suffix, which was first proposed six years ago by ICM Registry, a group that sells domain names, "will provide a place online for adult entertainment providers and their service providers who want to be part of our voluntary self regulatory community," according to that company's news release.

Adopting .xxx will be optional. However, some tech blogs speculate a push to make the domain mandatory for adult-only sites.

2. I hadn't thought of that
It'll be hell over at the RNC

Maybe they'll hire some extra workers to get those sites updated

3. I like the mandatory idea
That way, parents can block based on the .xxx and those specifically looking for porn will be able to find it.

Win-win for everyone.

4. I'm wondering how long it will be before someone tries to identify a sex-education site as...
...a porn site and so get it blocked, accordingly. I know a number of the "web safety" lists (even the enterprise-level corporate ones) are fairly-easily poisoned- DU I think was at least one time blocked by some Symantec safety software based on reports from users, which mostly drive the ratings system in the first place.

13. Depends on the criteria.
Nekkid boobs/dicks/female crotches or anything requiring a "Yes, I am 18+" intro should be filtered.

I say this as a female who has a good friend in that (film) industry. Apparently, from what I hear, the industry is in favor as well.

14. No, the industry is not in favor of it
Your friend is misinformed.

Let me ask you, would it be fair for the Registry that regulates a dot kids domain to charge $50.00-$250.00 per domain registration?

6. Can't really see many bothering to do this
ISPs would likely as not just start blocking the TLD, and there's no possible way it could be enforced if made mandatory.

10. about 4 years ago, I was doing research on a death penalty position paper
I found deathpeanaltyinfo.org Great resource. When I revisited the site several months later a porn site had somehow managed to take it over or reroute from dpi to them. Anyway, for two weeks overtime I clicked the site, I got porn. I thought then that porn should have its own domain

16. Sounds to me like the people who originally owned the domain
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 08:24 PM by blogslut
...neglected to pay their registration fee. That is not uncommon. People let domains die only to be snapped up by others. Or they fail to pay their re-registration fees and the domain goes to the highest bidder.

20. Putting the stuff on that domain isn't about the content
Edited on Mon Jun-28-10 09:02 PM by Posteritatis
It's about the domain. Back around then, people liked to snipe or otherwise take over domains that had expired moments prior - or, in nastier cases, co-opt them in less legal ways. They'd nab somebody's domain, put something especially inappropriate on it like that, and let them know that they could get their domain back the moment they, say, gave the new owners a check for five thousand dollars. Sometimes people would end up paying, sometimes they could get the registrar to get them their domain back, sometimes it went into messy court cases. I don't know which happened with the DPIC, but they got their site back.

There've been a lot of changes in how domains are registered and re-registered since then specifically to prevent stuff like that from happening as much anymore. Requiring porn sites to be hosted on a different TLD would do nothing to prevent that, since it's not being done by people who care that much about ethics in the first place. Even if it were possible to micromanage website contents to that level - which it is not - they could just as easily put something else similarly offensive in its place, or put the porn content behind a token concealment.
