Slap Down at The Supermarket....Session Two |
|
......Well if you keep your ears open you just never know what kind of crap will spew from peoples moth while in the check out line...it never ceases to amaze me..
Just about an hour ago a young women about 24-25 was talking to her friend while going through the check out and being critical about Obama saying he has done a bad job and this country is going down hill quick with no hope at all of a recovery..this statement was made after one of the women had listen to Beck and Rush earlier today
Well I went through the checkout and waking to my car at the same time they were walking away from the Starbucks kiosk after getting their brew... I just couldn't help myself so I just came out and said excuse me..I couldn't help but overhear your critical statement about Obama...they kinda flinched and looked surprised that someone was listening...so I asked them if they voted for the other team in 2008...yes!!one of them said... so I said what solutions/programs did they offer and then asked what solutions do Beck and Rush offer up to help America on the path of healing????
One of women raised her voice high enough to have had store customers around her hear her say the following...." I FIND IT CREEPY THAT YOU WERE LISTENING TO MY PRIVATE CONVERSATION WITH MY FRIEND" I said WELL!! this is a public location isn't it???...It became so quiet you could hear a pin drop....I said I not only find it creepy but I find it scary that many people form opinions and thoughts based on statements made by BLOWHOLES on the radio/tv who don't even hold degrees in journalism and those same people never offer up solution either....Just MORE Division!!!!!
I walked away..

1. The wing nuts don't like to be called out do they? I always |
|
challenge people when I hear them criticizing Pres. Obama. They have no explanations/solutions, just as you experienced. Maybe it helps them to realize how ignorant they are. One can only hope.

3. Do you think you're helping Obama by 'challenging' people for speaking their opinions? |
|
Odd. I'd be creeped out if some perfect stranger approached me to instruct me.

...but if you to make an omelette, you've got to break a few eggs.
That said, I will concede there's a time and place for challenging RWers like this. If those two were speaking loud enough in a supermarket that everyone around them could hear, they're probably fair game.

12. It's scary for females to be remonstrated by strange men |
|
I'm assuming RSmith is male because of the account of how the women responded. "Creepy" is the indicative word.

8. If I think they are wrong, then I am just as free to speak my |
|
opinion. Yes, I think it "helps" Pres. Obama to correct fallacies. Yes, if they were behind me in a shopping line and speaking loud enough for me to hear them, I would have joined the conversation. Just as I hear others join in conversations about American Idol, etc. This is no different really. Don't know if I would go so far to come up to them in a parking lot after the fact though.
I keep thinking about Martin Luther King, Jr and his instruction to speak out if you see an injustice. I believe criticizing Pres. Obama and being totally wrong on the facts, etc. falls into this category. I was a teacher for many years in my career. Guess I can't help it :-).

2. RSmith your approach was creepy, |
|
They have a right to their opinions as you have a right to yours.
Some of us who don't listen to Rush or Beck fear this country is in serious trouble and fear a lack of recovery.
And we despair for the people and the environment in The Gulf states, too. The President is at the top, he said he was responsible. Remeber the speech?

11. We have a right to our opinions, but do you think we have a right to not have them challenged? |
|
These women were speaking in a public space, they were responded to in a public space. These were not entirely private conversations if they were easily overheard. Many of the people who listen to Limbaugh et al, believe most people agree with them. Countering that is not a bad thing. IMHO

16. People have a right to hold their own opinions, |

but they don't have a right to not have them challenged, especially in a public location where their conversation was easily overheard by others.

7. i was once in line at a fast food place |
|
back in 2003. in the line ahead of me was a guy with a tee-shirt that had FUGB on it. this woman in the line behind me went up to him and tried to dress him down for not respecting the president in war time. i remember thinking that it seemed a little creepy that even with all the yellow ribbons and the bush cheney stickers and the flag decals stuck on every flat surface, this woman couldn't stand for anybody to express a different opinion. weird huh?

...and one day there will probably be a real slap down at the supermarket, and you won't walk away.
Everyone has a right to their opinion. The fact you don't agree, doesn't give you carte blanche to be rude.

Calling them on the facts is healthy for society. They made their conversation public, so deserve to be corrected.

21. I sometimes wonder why 'zero tolerance' seems to mean strangers |
|
cannot have opinions and voice those opinions to each other without being accosted by someone who holds other opinions and doesn't know the other speakers.
Perhaps it's time to lighten up and let people talk amongst themselves.

23. I wonder what would have happened had the situation been in reverse. |
|
Even in public, if people are talking amongst themselves, they are taking **amongst themselves.** If they want others' opinions, they will be asked for. It would have been a lot different had someone just started spouting off her opinions to the OP while they were in line.
And yes, being approached in the parking lot by someone who you did not know was listening to your conversation inside -- or hell, by someone you don't know, period -- is a tad creepy. Lofty intentions not withstanding.
No "atta boys" from me on this one.
