Petition: End Mountaintop Removal
As oil continues to gush into the Gulf of Mexico from the Deepwater Horizon disaster, and as the Obama administration continues to approve new mountaintop removal coal mining permits, it has never been more obvious that America needs to aggressively pursue a clean energy future.

A critical first step in pursuing that future could be achieved if the Senate passed the Appalachia Restoration Act (S 696), which would sharply curtail mountaintop removal in the United States and protect the valleys, streams and communities that are being devastated by this destructive form of mining.

Ask Your Senators to Stop Big Coal from Dumping
Toxic Mining Waste into Our Streams

The Appalachia Restoration Act is a bill in the US Senate which will sharply reduce mountaintop removal coal mining by protecting our headwater streams, where our rivers, like the Mississippi and the Ohio, are born. Over 2000 miles of streams have already been buried and polluted. But we can stop this.

Contact your Senators today and ask them to become a cosponsor of S 696, the Appalachia Restoration Act. To learn more about the Appalachia Restoration Act visit www.ilovemountains.org/appalachia-restoration-act

1. I agree we need to stop burning fossil fuel in what ever form.
We are trying to convert to solar water and solar home heating. We have made large dents in our use, not even using ac last year. This summer has been too hot and I have already been sick with heat exhaustion..but we are using a much smaller 1/4 ac unit because of the insulation, roof painting and air sealing I have been doing over the last 3 1/2 yrs. We have about 1/2 of the lights changed to LEDs(buying 1 or 2 at a time) they are the most used fixture in the house..now we use 64 watts to brightly light the kitchen when it was the original bulbs/fixtures it was almost 500 watts, when we went to cfls we used 280. The less power we use here the better since something on the order of 75% of our power is coal generated.
We knocked down our power use by 3/4 since moving here, we want to get the required power need down to about 800 kwhrs that we can start adding solar panels, back up etc. We needed 3300 to 3800 kilowatt hrs to run the house when we moved in we have it stabilised at about 1200 kwhrs per month now, but that ac unit is gonna take some power, its a very eff unit and uses 1/4 of the power.

If we each took steps like this we could make such a large dent and not go broke..we are on a fixed income and we spent 3700$ on small projects only the front load washer was expensive at 1200, but return on investment worked out to about 2 1/2 yrs in $ savings.
Most of the projects cost 100$ or less, some things like the insulated drape liners were 25$ per window bought a set or two at a time and roi was about 3 months for 15 windows. Foam in a can. a roll of insulation here and there. We save about 2500 per year in electric savings alone. We are not sitting in the dark and what we don't spend on power bills is like a raise and we can eat on that!
Besides is this so hard to save yourself some bucks and help the environment too?
