Pit bull attempts to drag 3 month old baby from her home...that was on fire.
Family says dog tried to pull baby out of burning home

BRISTOL — The Elkhart County Red Cross is calling a Bristol pit bull a hero after he alerted his family to a fire, and even tried to pull a 3-month-old baby girl away from the danger.

The fire started around 3 a.m. Thursday in a hallway and quickly spread throughout the home.

“It sounds like the real hero here is the family pit bull,” said Frank Connolly, assistant executive director of the Elkhart County Red Cross. “Apparently ‘Thor’ woke the family up and even tried to pull the baby and bassinet out of the house. Lately we have learned how important pets can be to a family, and this is as stark an example as I’ve ever seen.”

The family says Thor barked and jumped on them until they woke up. Then he grabbed the baby's bassinet and dragged it to the front door.

That sounds like something a really loyal dog would do.

18. Make sure you check the paper.
We found a chihuahua and put a free "found" ad in.

Of course, no one claimed him - I think he was purposely let go because he's an old guy. Anyway, he's joined our other three dogs and makes up the smallest and oldest addition to our "pack."

35. Awww....that's nice he found a nice home.
You're a good person and I'm just hoping someone as good as you has her.

We've done everything. Put an ad on Craig's List, the printed and online local paper, printed flyers with a reward and put in people mailboxes, reported to the Humanes Society, check the pound every other day, check the lost and found ads. It's been 2 weeks and we're losing hope and I'm devastated. I'm thinking of contacting a pet psychic. Anything...I'd try anything.

I kept her several weeks/year for my sister when she was traveling and she was so attached to me. She knew my car and would start howling when I drove up. We were like soulmates.

I just can't shake this terrible depression and the horrid thoughts going through my mind about what's happened to her.

Here's her picture. I can't even look at it any more without crying.

40. Try calling animal control
Here, animal control is affiliated with ASPCA and the Humane Society. The guys are out on the street every day and they CARE about the animals.

I lost a dog, years ago. I called them and didn't get the answer I wanted. He was dead. But I spoke to the guy who found him and at least got closure.

Here's hoping you get a better result than I did. (It was years ago. Sympathy is no longer needed.)

but I haven't checked to see if they picked up any dead dogs in my area. They're out of my jurisdiction for that, I think. I'm in the county. Wouldn't hurt to try though.

Thanks for the advice.

71. I hope you find her alive and well
We have 4 rescues. One is my aide dog and seizure alert..she has even alerted to cancer in a stranger one day at the dr office. she reared up on her back legs and sniffed a ladys abdomen higher where ovaries are..and turned to mee and whined her special alert. I told the lady she is an alert dog and Im not trying to be rude or pry, but this is Dora she is an alert dog and says that there is something wrong..you should get checked. It turned out she was gong to the same dr I was and told her she should get a check she was there for a respiratory problem so dr did varios tests and I saw her again a few weeks later..turned out to be stage 3 ovarian cancer..just in time to get treatment.

Our other girls were variously starved and abused and neglected..
They have 2 3/4 acres of yard good food lots of love.

One ran off after deer a few days after we got her and I put out flyers on gas stations , shelters. I looked personally and found that a nissan versa will got places a jeep would not..and I had just had colon cancer surgery (dirt road are not recommended when you have a big wound like that).

We found her 2 weeks later when someone had seen my poster at a gas station on the other side of the county and told me there was a dog that looked like Callie at a nieghbors house and she was very skinnny..they were not feeding her either..she was starved and beaten and freaked out when you took off a belt..now her fur has grown back in she is sweet, well fed and gained about 40 pounds..what she is supposed to weigh i mean. and she is the house guard and very pretty she is collie and Maremma sheep dog..so she looks like a white collie.
I know how you feel, Callie the collie is not the fist dog that got lost and I have had to hunt for.

134. Thanks for your story, HillbillyBob
I'm so glad to hear of the happy ending. And I love hearing about good, responsibile pet owners.

I've spent too much time on the FB and websites of the shelters and it depresses me to no end to see the dogs people surrender and their reasons.

I think I've decided that I want to become a foster. But I work full time and don't get home sometimes until 6 or 6:30 so I don't know if it's a good idea or not. I think it would at least be better than being in the pound on a cold hard concrete floor with little human contact.

82. So sorry about your lost dog
I'm sure you've researched the internet for the latest info on finding lost pets. I don't know much about missing dogs, but I've had luck tracking down missing cats using techniques I learned from various websites. A whole psychology has developed about how missing animals act when they are lost, for example strictly indoor cats behave much differently than outdoor access cats when they go missing. For cats there is even a yahoogroup for missing cats and there may be one for missing dogs too.

The best thing that worked for me was printing up a little postcard with a picture (in color) of my lost cat and going door to door with it and leaving it with neighbors and anyone else within a couple of blocks. On the postcard I said to call anytime day or night and the people who saw my cat one day were earlybirds and they called at about 530AM on a Sunday! That was fine with me, and I ran right out and scooped up my cat. People are more likely to keep an eye out if they meet you in person when you give them the postcard. I usually ask if they can put it on their refrigerator too. FYI, if someone is not at home when you go door to door, don't put the card or flyer in their mailbox (against the law). I just usually left it between their doorknob and the door of their house.
GOOD LUCK -- I know how painful this is. Here are some websites below with something else you can try, if you can find someone locally. Sometimes pets have been found several months later. My cat was missing twice (!) three to four months each time.

Some good places to put posters/flyers are churches, laundromats, post offices, grocery stores, convenience stores.

Like I said, I have no ill-will toward cats. I'm sure there are many, like yours, who are wonderfully loving friends.

I, however, have reached my maximum of dog/cat combos (in my city, a person is only allowed up to four dog/cat combos unless given a trainer/breeder license or you get busted for hording, which is a GOOD thing).

I have rescued four dogs.

We got Sparky from the shelter and on the way home, stopped and got burgers thru the drive-through. When my husband placed the order, Sparky spoke up from the back seat - just a little bark and seemed to say, "hey, get me a plain one, okay?" Which we did. He was a stray, so the shelter didn't know his exact age, but vet said he was about four or five. He lived with us just over 10 years - what a barrel of fun he was.

123. One of Sparky's tricks was trying to get that curly tail - he'd go in
circles after it. And walking him on a dark night I'd always be able to see him with that flair of a tail in the air. When the grandkids were little he'd let them put a hat and a pair of glass frames (no glass in 'em) on - he'd prance around looking very bookish.

22. Have you ever been actively hugged by a dog?
Our GSD hugs. She comes up behind us and presses her side to our butts. Then she wraps her neck and head around us, ending up with her ear on the front of our hip and her face looking up at us. She does this all the time, so it is, to her, a conscious behavior. Never had another dog do that. She'll do this at appropriate times, it seems, as a way to thank or just get reassured we still love her. She does it to Sparkly and to me.

I had two wonderful dogs in my life. The first one followed me to school regularly. She died when I went to New York - she was 16 years old and even though my parents and younger siblings took care of her, she missed me big time. My other dog, Roots, was even more special. One day I was crying after hearing that mom was ill and she climbed into my chair and laid her head on my shoulder. I cried for a month after she died at 12.

57. I get so weary of the "pit bull" moniker.
To me it's no different from "radical cleric" or the n-word. Mielke, my extended family chocolate lab, is often mistaken for a "kampfhund." He's been well-trained since puppyhood and no fewer than 10 of us in his extended family can give him an instruction which even in his nearly deaf old age he will follow IMMEDIATELY. It's NOT about the dog's breed, it's about THE OWNERS.

I LOVE the idea floated in SF, although I do believe fish should NOT be exempted.

Edited on Sat Jul-10-10 01:37 PM by smokey nj
I'm a pet sitter and they're 2 of my clients. They're owners have a guest staying with them and Petey got in one of her bags and ate ibuprophen. He was quite sick for a couple of days and had some residual bowel control issues after the crisis passed - hence the diapers. He looked so cute, I had to take a picture.

Edited to add: My husband made the same suggestion that you made. Many people think they're Boston terriers and one little kid thought they were rabbits. I think the kid who thought they were rabbits was more on target than the guy who thought they were pit bulls.

Dogs that are properly socialized are good, and those that aren't are not so good. I think Golden Retrievers are actually responsible for the greatest amount of dog bites in the United States.

143. I bet on a per-capita basis Golden's don't bite more often
They're the most popular breed in America, so there's a decent chance there the one breed bites the most people.

But I seriously doubt they bite the most people per dog.

"Gelert the Great"

The grave of Gelert can be found just south of Snowdon, in the grey-stoned village of Beddgelert set among the wild mountains of Wales. Here, in a beautiful meadow below Cerrig Llan, is a large stone slab lying on its side with two upright slabs which owes its fame to the legend of Prince Llewelyn ap Iorwerth and his faithful hound.

Llyn Gwynant near Beddgelert

Llewelyn (1173-1240 CE) was very fond of hunting and in the summer he lived in a hunting lodge at the foot of Snowdon. Although he had many dogs, his favorite was the brave Gelert, his great Irish Wolf Hound, not only a dog fearless in the hunt, but a loyal friend and companion at the fireside.

One fateful day on the hunt, Gelert refused to accompany his master further, but instead he ran howling back to the Lodge. When Llewellyn returned he was met by his dog, bounding to meet him, but splashed with blood around his muzzle. On entering his living quarters, Llewellyn found a scene of confusion with rooms disordered and articles scattered in heaps. Now Llewelyn had a son, barely a year old, and as the prince recalled how Gelert and his little boy used to play together, a terrible thought came to his mind!

He rushed to the nursery only to find the cradle was overturned, the bed clothes bloody and though he looked frantically for his son, the child could not be found.

Turning to Gelert, whose muzzle was still wet with blood, Llewelyn came into a great rage and cried, "Thou hast killed my only son", and drew his sword and drove it into the heart of the hound.

Then- as all was silent but for the steady drip of blood onto the stone flag floor, the wail of a baby could be heard. On searching further Llewellen found his son safe and well, lying next to the body of a large grey wolf.

It was plain to see what had happened !

Gelert had killed the wolf whilst defending the baby from attack. Overcome with grief at his hasty action, Llewellyn buried Gelert with all honor and raised a memorial over his grave.

From then on the settlement was known as Beddgelert, meaning "Gelert's Grave" and this is the traditional tale still told today.

Gelert's grave can be found a short distance south of the village, following the footpath along the banks of the Glaslyn leads to Beddgelerts most famous historical feature "Gelert's Grave". According to legend, the stone monument in the fields, marks the resting place of "Gelert" the faithful hound of the medieval Welsh Prince Llywelyn the Great.

The story, as written on the tombstone reads:

"In the 13th century Llywelyn, prince of North Wales, had a palace at Beddgelert. One day he went hunting without Gelert, "The Faithful Hound", who was unaccountably absent. On Llywelyn's return the truant, stained and smeared with blood, joyfully sprang to meet his master. The prince alarmed hastened to find his son, and saw the infant's cot empty, the bedclothes and floor covered with blood. The frantic father plunged his sword into the hounds side, thinking it had killed his heir. The dog's dying yell was answered by a child's cry. Llywelyn searched and discovered his boy unharmed, but near by lay the body of a mighty wolf which Gelert had slain. The prince filled with remorse is said never to have smiled again. He buried Gelert here.

68. That is one sad story
The man acts without thinking; human interest is raised above all other creatures and violent revenge is enacted upon someone who can't speak.

A remorseful monument doesn't bring back that loving dog, and poor Gelert is still dead and betrayed. Though it's nice that the story is preserved for posterity.

I like animals so much better than people.

It is ALWAYS the innocent creatures who have to pay the price for stupidity and thoughtlessness of human beings.

I do not want to even think about how many dogs...and cats, too..but dogs get the bad publicity...have been "put down" due to the incredible stupidity of the person who was supposed to take care of them..
So many times when I have heard of a dog "maulimg" and the dog being "destroyed" I only wish that the owner/caretaker/whatever....was the one being put down.

I have personally never met a "bad" pit bull. I did meet one rescue pit that had been so severely abused that she wouldn't go near people, but the rest have been very social and fun dogs. One pit did "hurt" me a little when his tail wagged and whipped my leg, but I knew what I was getting in to when I scratched his back. He was such a happy, gentle giant of a pit with a seriously powerful tail.

Thor obviously has a family who loves him and he loves them back. Here's a pic of him:

93. Good doggy! FLVegan...
question for you since you know pits so well. I also have a pit - a three year old little girl! Her paws have been really beat up this summer. Perhaps I give her too much exercise. We live right next to Central Park, so I take her running there all the time and after 9pm there is off leash time and I let her run all over with me and she really loves it. I had to stop this 6 weeks ago as her paws were just blistered and bleeding and getting worse. It would not go away. Two weeks ago I started a regimen of soaking her paws in water with iodine for 15 minutes after her night walk. They are starting to improve! I am so relieved and so is she no doubt. I can tell because it no longer hurts when I clean her paws off after a walk. I hope all the blisters will be gone in two more weeks or so.

Have you experienced this before? I heard the pitties can have delicate paws. I really want to take her running again, but now I am hesitant to do so. She does love running with me though!

Your experienced knowledge is appreciated!

99. Hi! Yes, I've experienced this before
and not just with pibbles. Some dogs (like people) have more sensitive contact areas. Do you run on the paved pathways or on the grass? If you're running on the paved area with her, see if you can get her to run on the grass instead. The pavement can really tear up doggie feet if they run a lot. This time of year it's even worse and the pavement can get very hot in the sunlight.

Let her paws get better before you take her running again. If they deteriorate again, it might be time for a trip to the vet. She may have an allergy to any fertilizer or pesticide they might be using in the park, which could also cause the problem.

Good luck to you and your little girl!

126. It may be the hot pavement during the day when she gets walked.
My girlfriend now walks her earlier in the morning and I walk her at night to avoid the hottest times. She rans with me on the pavement, so no more of that. All that said, she is getting better so I feel good about that.

On a really sour note...

I went for a 20 mile run shortly after I posted to you. I sometimes run around the perimeter of the northern half of Manhattan to challenge myself. When I got to 181st and Amsterdam inside of a remote and somewhat desolate park (for manhattan) called Highbridge Park, I was running up some stairs that have not been maintained in years...and tied to a fence on a very short leash and clearly starving and dehydrated was a dog staring right at me!

I could not believe someone would be so cruel - in this heat especially!

I had to then walk into the Washington Heights neighborhood and buy some bowls, water, and dog food. I also bought a leash to try to walk the guy allllllll the way back to 110th st where ACC is. The dog immediately drank an entire bottle of water...and then drank another....and then ate a huge bowl of dog food. Then I left some more food and left another bottle of water in the one of the bowls.

The dog was not interested in me coming near her - she kind of went exorcist crazy on me and showed some really nasty teeth when I went close by with the leash...so I did not take her with me.

I tried to call ACC to come pick up the animal, but they said their last guy to do that was done for the day. I walked to a police station at 169th st...and they redirected me to the correct precinct. I called the correct precint and ran back to 181st...the cop showed up 30 minutes later. They took the dog to the ACC. A dog rescuer I know will check into it for me and let me know how the behavioural analysis goes...I am a bit worried about that since she was very nasty to me, but that could have just been the intense stress the dog as under.

At that point I wanted to just take a cab or subway back to the Upper East Side, but I spent every last cent on feeding the dog and buying the leash I did not get to use...so I ran 6 or 7 miles straight back home.

Never happened to me before...here are some pics:

Right when I found the dog:

Right after feeding the dog:

you'd have to be really evil to treat an animal

Capers, anchovies, a raw egg yolk, a little chopped onion and Worcestershire sauce are perfect compliments to raw youngster.

OK, OK let me add:

It cutens up my evil, thus rendering me more socially acceptable.

115. Excellent pooch.
It is wonderful to have such a friend....The two dogs I have had since I came back from Europe where I spent most of my adult life, one a Westy (died of cancer at age 12), buried under a fringe tree in the yard and the Silky now on the back of my chair, wrapped around my neck resting her head on my shoulder, were godsends. After the heartache from the death of Bazil, I went without the friendship of a dog for 3 years...big mistake, big depression. They will both eventually be buried with me because in the fantasy world of my mind, there can be no heaven without them. I envision all the dogs of my life running around in that Elysian garden; That is no little comfort in my old age even if it is just a fantasy. People, for the most part, I can do without.

125. One dog saves a few lives, 4,500,000 more people get attacked this year
How many orders of magnitude are you more likely to get attacked by a dog than saved?

Didn't they ever hear of a smoke detector? Works a lot better than keeping a dangerous animal as a fire alarm.

139. Dogs are, for the most part, like molding clay, but so within the traits of a particular breed
There is some truth to the saying that dogs look like their owners. The fact that a large majority of folks owning pit bulls, is so because that breed reflect their own personality. This dog has a loving family and like most dogs, will, with unflinchingly loyalty, return that love, with all that it has got. Dogs, no matter the breed, who are mistreated, will reflect that misguided anger sometimes viciously. The fault dear Brutus lies not in the breed of the dog, but in the breed of its the owner.

142. Our Pit is the sweetest animal you'd ever want to meet ...
Edited on Sun Jul-11-10 03:40 PM by brettjv
We have our 5 nieces and nephews over between the ages of 1 and 8 and he's never so much as accidentally knocked the 1 year old over. He is an amazingly gentle and sweet animal. Often when he greets the smallest kids he gets down on his belly and crawls over to them, as if he's aware that he's intimidating and doesn't want to scare them. He is also extremely protective of the property, at least in the sense of barking at the first sign of intruders. Not sure he'd actually do anything to an intruder if one came in because he's so passive, but ... I hope he would.

Pit Bulls get a bad rap because of bad people who breed and raise them to attack and fight. There's nothing wrong with the breed itself, but like I say there are strains of the breed that have purposefully been molded to be fighters, and some of these are indeed dangerous animals. But that's because of people and their idiocy. Even one that's bred to be a fighter like my g/f's mom's dog (a rescue) can still be raised to be sweet dogs ... although hers is a lot more muscular, hyper, and generally intimidating than our dog, he's never bitten anyone or even acted inclined to do so. He's a good boy as well.

146. "extremely protective of property" So it is going to become aggressive at....
Possibly anyone. Sounds like a danger to anyone around it, Delivery boy, meter reader, child chasing a lost baseball, anyone around if it gets out, or a new friend.

Sounds like the exact opposite of the sweetest animal.

147. My dog is extremely protective of property.
She's not a guard dog, a watch dog, or a fighting dog. She's a herding dog; an Australian Shepherd.

She's extremely territorial. She won't leave home when I do (unless invited to go along,) although she can maneuver just about any fence. She stays to watch the rest of the "herd." WE are her property.

Her "herd" includes me, the cat, the chickens, the horses, and the sheep. She has a ranking system. I'm at the top, the cat comes next (the cat is older and was already here when she was a pup,) then her, and then the rest.

She barks fiercely at anything approaching any fence line on the 6 acres, whether it's human, machine, or animal.

If someone enters the property, she races to greet them. She doesn't bite them, but until I appear to call her off, she is aggressive. She wiggles her hind end and stub tail at them, pushes her nose under their hands to explain that petting is okay, and generally blocks their progress with her body, not allowing them to get any closer to me. It doesn't matter how old they are, or how well she knows them. Friendly but firm; they don't come any closer unless I call her off.

I didn't teach her to do that. I had to spend a great deal of time teaching her to sit at my side without bothering people when told to do so.

She does the same with other dogs. She likes other dogs. She loves to play with them. If someone brings a dog (or if the neighbor's pit gets loose and comes to visit, a frequent occurrence,) she'll do the exact same thing with them. Play energetically unless they try to approach me, at which point, she heads them off at the pass and herds them away.

She's more aggressive with other dogs than people. If a dog continues, and tries to approach me after she's "explained" things to them, she'll growl at them. If that doesn't work, she'll nip...just like a working herding dog with a stubborn cow. She HAS growled and nipped at the neighbor's escaped pit, who will stubbornly ignore all milder efforts to move her away from me. She likes attention. The pit never retaliates; just sighs, moves back, and engages my dog in play instead of me.

She's never bothered meter readers or delivery people. Of course, they read the meter from outside the fence, and a delivery person drops boxes inside the fence without opening the gate. Most of the time. She welcomes them if they DO open the gate, making a pest of herself in her attempts to 1. Stop them from moving toward the house, and 2. Get them to pet her. She welcomes the vet, the horse shoer, and hay delivery people.

Child chasing a ball? She "helps" until the child gets more than 20 yards away from me, at which point, she stops and returns, refusing to leave her self-assigned distance-limit from me.

Understanding the source of a dog's aggression is important. So is socialization, training, and common sense.

My dog is perfectly sweet, and she can be aggressive. Those two things aren't exclusive of each other.

The family of the pit in the OP is probably glad that he became aggressive in his attempts to wake them up and get them out of the house.

144. What makes you say that?
We just shouldn't pretend they are anything but dangerous animals.

And smart people would think twice about the animal that puts their children in danger and go buy a smoke detector or two.
