Spain wins World Cup!
That wasn't the best-played game today, but I was excited! I also hope this year's World Cup broadcast helps to legitimize the game here in the US as something other than what your kids play and then grow out of.

Very classy of the Butch to form a guard of honor as the Spanish team took to the field to celebrate - Spanish colors for the fireworks - lovely!! Better to lose the first match than your last one.

35. Fugg me? Yes, I was the unreccer. I just outed myself
I tried
I really tried
to get interested.

But nothing happened,

And then some totally bogus call ruined it for the team I was rooting for.

Fuck soccer.

7. It was an UGGLY game...
but good for Spain...

And the game is getting more and more legitimacy...

You see kids who played it (hubby) love to watch it as adults. And more and more of those kids are growing to do such.

It is not just us furiegners who've come to the US... doing it with kids in the ciudades perdidas (the stones won that day... I did not have tennis shoes no way I was going to play with steel toe boots)... but honest to goodness kids who grew up here.

12. That's what we are talking about
that soccer game with those kids, it came from all of us in public safety getting real tired of the small stuff juvvies do. So we got some two by fours, some digging equipment, and I bought a few soccer balls. We cleared a field and set a dirt field for the kids.

You will not be too shocked to learn that our crime wave went down to nothing... and the eyes of those kids when they saw the balls... but they insisted we play with them. So I removed my boots...

that is something that kids here in the US would never get, at least not in the large cities.

45. Well since Brazil is becoming a regional power
and soccer is getting more and more adepts in the US... perhaps by 2018 or 2022, when we should get the cup, those of us who like it... will enjoy it. For the moment LOOKING FORWARDS to Brazil in four years...

And you have a good day...

Now lets see what were the numbers for people watching the game on ABC\Univision. I am willing to bet it was highest number ever.

55. I like soccer (excuse me football) and greatly enjoy the world cup most years.
Unfortunately this was a sub-par World Cup. Partially due to a second rate host and partially due to bad officiating across the board.

That said I have been around for every soccer boomlet from Pele to Hamm and it simply hasn't taken hold here.

I seriously doubt that this sub-par presentation will sway many people... (if anything it may have turned off potential fans)

30. Not even close.
They've actually come up with a decent way to view offside (or not) on a replay: shading the offside part of the pitch in a darker green. And Iniesta wasn't anywhere near it.

I doubt you will listen and usually, what I get is "you can't tell me what to do". In the 7 years I've been at DU, only one person has ever said "damn, sorry about that. I got excited" (and then she never did it again).

But I'll give it a shot, anyway.

Out of common courtesy, you should not post spoilers in thread titles. Rather than "Spain wins World Cup!", you could have gone with "World Cup Final (spoiler)"... then, we all had the CHOICE of actually clicking on the link and discussing it.

Doing it this way, you removed the choice from anyone who may have had to TIVO this to watch it later. Yes, it's preferable to watch the game live, but sometimes, circumstances force us to watch it after it's already been played.

You took away my husband's choice. After fixing my car (I really need it tomorrow), he came in to take a short break before we watched the game. Now, you would think that coming to DU would be safe, but it never is.

Posting the title with the Spoiler alert would allow those who got to watch the game live to participate in the discussion and those who didn't get a chance to watch it live to skip that thread.

That being said, I have watched the game already, but I didn't get to watch it with my husband, as he already knew who won. There are real consequences to your actions. I hope you will take this suggestion the next time you post about television events that others may not have watched yet.

38. you know, in the past I learned the hard way
but now, if I *REALLY* don't want to know the results of some game, I stay *OFF* the internet. It's best to assume that you will see what you don't want to see.

It's simple - just don't take any chances if it's that important.

39. I do apologize. I hadn't given spoiling a moment's thought
and I really do apologize for my thoughtlessness.

However.

I assert that it is not realistic to come to a discussion/news site and expect to be able to neither hear nor see who has won the World Cup. Why on earth would "coming to DU...be safe"? And if he refuses to watch an exciting, dirty, important match just because he knows the outcome, he's the one missing out.

51. He watched it, but you must realize, it's really not the same
Since he knew that Spain won. Luckily, he didn't know the score or the fact that Spain won in overtime, so he was able to enjoy most of it.

I really did try to be as nice as possible about this, so I appreciate you not biting my head off. I KNOW people get caught up in the excitement of something happening. But it should be realistic to be able to come to a board that is theoretically about politics and not read the results of a sporting event. At one of the soccer boards he "hangs out at", spoilers are so frowned upon that he could have gone to that site and not found out the results. That's the irony of the whole thing.

And I also knew what the response would be (though you were much nicer about it than most people are) :)

I have to fly out to Chicago today, so this will probably be the last thing I have to say on this. Thanks for taking the time to read and respond to my post.

48. Why would you think ANY site on the internet would be safe?
According to the ESPN talking heads, 1 in 4 people in the world watched the match. That's almost 2 billion people. They're all going to have opinions about it and will blog them immediately wherever they like.

My email programs (earthlink and google) both have major world news headlines on their log-in page before you go to your inbox. Winner of the WC is definitely major world news. Even the American network 5 o'clock news runs with it as a lede. You posted your OP several hours after the game. Where in the hell online do you think you could go and stay spoiler-free? Even my SF-geek blogroll and my mostly-music-nerdy Facebook was full of WC posts.

Some of us are too busy trying to prevent medical bankruptcy as well as keeping our loved ones alive and can't just stop when it's convenient.

There is little enough joy to be had and, on a an actual sports board, this will get you banned as well as the post deleted.

Oh well, they play another one in four years, maybe I will be allowed to enjoy that one...
