The old cap worked around that problem by pumping methanol into the flow, and warming things up so the crystals didn't form.

In theory, if the seal holds, water won't get in the flow at all in any meaningful quantity, thus the methane hydrate crystals won't form.

I'm even more hopeful that the relief wells will permanently end the flow.

My elation, however, is moderated by grief for the suffering of humans and animals, and also mitigated somewhat by fury at BP that this happened at all when it was SO unnecessary, if BP had made any effort to operate by industry standards.

Wishing many years of suffering upon the particular (currently unknown) persons who caused this catastrophe strikes me as a reasonable attitude -- at least as many years of suffering as the shrimpers and oystermen and whales and porpoises will be forced to endure . . .
