Unemployment Extension: Welfare Lines Getting Longer As Benefits End
Unemployment Extension: Welfare Lines Getting Longer As Benefits End
By Ashley Jones on July 13, 2010, 5:43 am Posted in Finance News

When the Senate had problems getting HB 4213 passed and peoples extensions and benefits ran out back in early June, the 1.2 million that lost their benefits didn’t make any headlines as they went to the welfare lines. A sad situation, but when the Senate called for their July 4th recess and sent more than 1 million more to the lines, this can become a problem in some places. It appears that in Ohio the upsurge in the assistance requests has caused a near meltdown.

Ohioans Flocking To Ask For Aid

As their unemployment benefits run out, people are left with little else to do except request public assistance, and in Ohio the DHS is reporting a major increase in the amount of assistance requests. Their data shows that a 27% increase over last years figures, and food stamp recipients have increased by 22% over the same period. In their offices the phone-lines have been jammed and county leaders voice mails fill up in minutes. The state is asking those in Ohio with internet access to go to: www.summitdjfs.org/ucinfo.html for basic information and sending e-mails. The Ohio Benefits Bank is also being pushed, their website address is: obb.ohio,gov.

1. I think food stamps is all they get. The days of free housing and monthly
payments are over.

5. I didn't qualify for anything. Not unemployment, nadita.
If it weren't for the work my family scraped up for me, I'd be homeless I think.

I've been working fulltime since the age of 16. It's crazy.

6. When my best friend's elderly brother dies, she'll probably end up here
Without his SSI, she cannot afford to rent a place . Her income is not enough to live on..and she has no pension..just a small 401-k..

7. Yes you are right on there! All around the country that is true, and has been for years now.
My son, who came down with a terrible neurological problem could get NO help when he became totally disabled in 2006 in Florida because he was single and had never fathered a child! It is pitiful and those that don't know about that will get a BIG surprise when they too try to get some help to get them through very tough times! It is not fair!
