Vatican issues new guidelines on sexual abuse cases

The new rules allow the Vatican to fast-track the defrocking of a priest guilty of child molestation and extend the statute of limitations on reporting abuse. Critics say they are not enough.

Under the revised regulations, the Holy See can fast-track the defrocking of a cleric guilty of child molestation. The rules extend the statute of limitations within church law in such cases and define sexual abuse of the mentally disabled and possession of child pornography as canonical crimes for which a priest can be stripped of his clerical status...

And controversially, the new document classifies the attempted ordination of a woman as a canonical crime equal in gravity to molesting minors and heresy. That has outraged advocates of greater rights for women within the Roman Catholic Church, many of them in the United States...

I've been following a discussion about this on another Internet site, and the folks there say there is really no difference betweenn lumping criminal sex offenders in with those who just happen to be women. In fact, ordaining women is fraud, dontcha know, and both diddling priests and those silly women who somehow feel a calling to serve their God and religion are leading the flock astray.

It's like equating shoplifting to capital murder, in my opinion, and is about the biggest insult the Church can throw at women.
