There are a handful of Republicans that are standing up to the "Tea Party" |
|
Lindsey Graham is one of them.
Lost among all the other news yesterday was the fact that Graham voted "yes" to Elena Kagan in the judiciary committee yesterday.
He was the only Republican to do so.
A couple weeks ago, he spoke negatively about the Tea Party as well.
Every once in a while, there is a Republican who is not completely overboard. Lindsey's wrong about a lot of things, but he doesn't seem to have "teh evil" that most Republicans in congress have.

Graham denied it in a NYT story. He has never had a public relationship with a woman, but no proof of any gay relationships either.

He had a guy who was both a member of the League of the South (favors secession since it worked so well last time) and the Conservative Citizens Council (the Klan in suits instead of sheets) run against him. Graham beat him 2-1. If the Tea Party hasn't fizzled out by 2012 I'm sure he'll have some serious opposition, but SC tends to keep sending people back to DC - that's how they eventually won the Civil War. By the 1960s the South dominated both houses of Congress due to the seniority system. One other interesting point: Nikki Haley, the tea party and Palin endorsed candidate and GOP nominee for Governor, said during the primary that Graham should not be re-elected. Once she had secured the nomination, she re-evaluated and is now openly in favor of Graham. He is definitely my favorite republican in this state. A lot of Democrats voted for him the last time he ran because the Democratic candidate, believe it or not, actually took positions to the right of Graham, such as opposing immigration reform while Graham, at the time, was in favor of it.

8. and strangely one of them is Trent Lott. |

I don't know what they did to piss in his Wheaties but I've been following it in the local free morning RW daily here in DC (this and the sports coverage are the only reasons to read the damned thing.) and he seems to be drifting ever closer to telling them collectively to sit down and STFU with every single day. The latest one was he declared that he expected them to lose a lot of races for the GOP because “I still have faith in the visceral judgment of the American people.”
Ouch. Just ouch Tea Party dudes. Maybe you shouldn't have pissed off one of the most powerful RW lobbyists in town.
