have to live on floating barges in the Gulf closer to the operations. At Myrtle Grove Marine in Plaquemines Parish, hundreds of fishermen met with BP officials hoping to convince officials not to force them to live for 18 days straight on what is known as the "Flotels".
Many of them complained, it’s too long a time to be away from their families and voiced concern about the safety on the barges living with so many strangers.
"We can't lock our rooms and we all got to share one TV . I'm not in prison. If I wanted to be in prison I would break the law and go to jail." says lifelong Fishermen (sic)
, Jules Daigle III. The Flotels are basically a floating barge with large storage containers converted into bunk beds. At least four fishermen will share a room. The barge is also equipped with a laundry and a dining room for the workers....
"I decided I'm going to stay. I'll go to the Quarter boat and make the best of it. It's their way or the highway. Things are subject to change and we're going to do the best to get the job done."Ironically, these conditions sound somewhat similar to those on the Deepwater Horizon itself, though even less luxurious.
