BP Photoshops Another Official Image Terribly

This week it came to light that BP had photoshopped--poorly--an official image of their crisis command center. Apparently, that wasn't an isolated incident. Let's take a closer look at this view from a helicopter, shall we?

The photo, sent in by a tipster and entitled "View of the MC 252 site from the cockpit of a PHI S-92 helicopter 26 June 2010," shows up here, a section of BP's website that hopes to explain their response effort through pictures. This one, sadly, is fabricated.

3. It is faked. Look at the top left overhead window. Its parked on a helipad offshore

You can see the side of the derrick or ship. I can't tell from this angle. I am very familiar with PHI, and those very helicopters and there's nothing like that structure at the heliport in Houma, and certainly nothing on the helicopter itself right there, which sadly means the view out of the window is impossible. You would not be able to view the 'source' from that angle on a helipad as you'd be level with those ships and rigs.

AFAIK, PHI rules do not allow viewing of the cockpit during flight. There is a curtain pulled between the cabin and the cockpit. There is a mechanic sat next to the curtain, facing the cabin to ensure that it stays closed and to ensure helicopter safety. Heck I'm not even sure the pilots are holding controls in this photo. Looks like they are running checklists. Ergo, this photo was taken while landed.

I have a bunch of photos of the source, taken off one of those helicopters. There was no need to fake one. On some days the water was blue and clear and on some you could see a bunch of oil. It just depended on the day, I guess the currents, etc. This makes me very sad. Stuff like this does nothing to inspire confidence in the cleanup and I am one of the seemingly few on this site that is behind BP's efforts and offshore drilling.

7. Geez, didn't they hire some big PR firm a while ago...

I am pretty sure I read on DU they had done so....ahhh, this explains it, heading the PR is Cheney's former press secretary. If this and the other photoshopped picture is a sample of her/their work, $1.00 is paying them too much.

9. BP didn't photoshop it. It was lifted out of PHI's monthly newsletter.

Just saying. In this case someone probably forwarded it to BP and no one bothered to check it. But its not something BP did on purpose. No, I'm not being paid to say this. I just believe in laying blame where its due rather than jumping on a pile because its popular.
