1. Amen. It's all speculation, and who cares??
Whatever it costs, the parties involved are paying for it, not us.

None of our business, yet the media sure likes to stir it up.

5. I am not joking
There are threads attacking them for spending figures being presented by Clinton hating media hacks. I agree with you that it is not my business but the attacks are annoying me.

12. And just how is the cost of a private citizen's wedding our business?
Both Bill and Chelsea are private citizens. Just how does the fact that Hillary is a public employee make the cost of her daughter's wedding our business? They are wealty as a result of their book deals and private speeches and other work - I don't see how we, the US taxpayers are paying for it. Even if Hillarly's salary was completely covering it, it's money that she's earned and that she's paid her own personal income taxes on so taxpayer-funding isn't an issue.

Not my business - I don't care.

like you, I don't particularly even like the Clintons, but whose fucking business is it what their daughter's wedding cost.

And I feel really sorry for those folks whose lives are so lacking in, well, anything, that they would actually give a shit how much it costs.

I, and one billion Chinese, just do not care.

The notion that people have so much wealth that they can piss vast sums of it away inconsequentially
Edited on Thu Jul-22-10 06:34 PM by Oregone
...sums that could save thousands of lives, feed clothe & educate people, and end so much suffering...

Well, it indicates that the methods of distributing wealth created in our society are not necessarily working to benefit all, but rather a few--and it benefits them so such a degree they can spend it on superfluous weddings without care or regret. And the prices for benefiting those few, most often, is widespread pain for the rest--the very ones generating such wealth in the first place through their labor.

So...while you can say its no one's business what the Clintons spend, I say its *everyone's* business that people are in the position to spend such amounts so frivolously. The entire system is a fucked mess, and this is but a symptom. Gossip aside, there is a pattern of behavior here that is the consequence of disparity perpetrated by capitalism. Leave the Clintons out of it if you wish, but its a matter that needs to be addressed publicly; not merely the disgusting expenses of the rich, but rather, the allocation of wealth that allows the rich to so willingly spend in that manner.

23. My personal opinion of Clinton is that he's a sleazebag
but that's just an opinion. While I scratch my head in wonder at how he could have legitimately accumulated enough dough to bankroll a wedding like this I have absolutely no idea WTF he does with his money. Far as I know, he donates vast sums to underpriveleged people in various corners of the world. I just don't know. So I don't judge.

What I do know is that people get stupid when it comes to their daughter's wedding. In 1982, we shelled out about 10 grand on our daughter's wedding, although our annual income at the time was only about $40k. Thank god the union has lasted until today.

36. When a name is attached to the argument it becomes personal
instead of being about inequality and ostentatious displays of wealth amidst widespread poverty.

Because of this, people who like Clinton will find no problem with it while those who dislike him will regard it as in poor taste.

I guess to me it amounts to this - there are many unfair things taking place in our world today. In the hierarchy of things for me to get pissed off about this doesn't make it to the top ten.

22. Agreed. Bullshit speculation article to start with that even SAYS it's speculation.
Another thing is that it's the daughter of a former President and the current SoS. Guests will include a sitting President and dignitaries from the House and Senate and dignitaries from around the world. If it IS expensive, that is why. You expect them to be fed peanuts and dance to a DJ? Not likely.
