I keep hearing, most recently on Anderson Cooper, that the left does the same thing as Brietbart.

10. it's probably true in some respects
the internet is a big place. Certainly if you hang on the DU long enough from time to time odd badly informed blogs get linked. Just think of any anti-vaccination thread that might appear for example. Are there really non-factual based liberal blogs, yeah. So what? The problem is Anderson Cooper says liberal TV new shows do this... wait what liberal news shows? I mean to conservatives HIS OWN SHOW IS CONSIDERED a left wing loony show. He does know that right? How often do these extremely leftwing blogs get linked by major news organization? Particularly the ones that are totally factually fantastic? Heck how often do they even avoid flames here a DU where they might find a more friendly audience :) The answer is not very often. Meanwhile people like Matt Drudge, Breitbart, Coulter, Limbaugh... generate stories out of thin air (or given to them by conservative think tanks) and suddenly with zero fact checking find their blogs front line news as if it was news. Wow the NAACP, Code Pink or PETA should be so lucky as to have the amazing news generating power as some of these run of the mill slander artists. So yah probably on the internet(S) there's a lot of crap on the left and right, but on the ability for these blog writers to create BS and translate that into national air time and more importantly money making careers with the BS? That feels like a BS fantasy of Coopers.

12. I would be nice if, just once, someone actually asked one
of these media assholes for examples, wouldn't it?

4. Thanks. Missed that.
My reaction was from what I just saw. Didn't watch earlier in the week.

This entire, "they do the same thing" is fucking ridiculous.

5. All I have to say to Anderson Cooper is
PROVE IT. Come up with at least one example.

The days of making blanket statements about "the left" are over, buddy.

Put up or shut up.

6. In June 2003 Paul Wolfowitz said something that was taken out of context.
And the story was retracted by the original source (The Guardian) and I do recall that people were saying we should spread the out-of-context meaning anyways. I may have been among them. I see the archives only let you search back to 2004 so I'll probably never be able to prove it.

7. I heard it Wednesday night.
Cooper opened his show by repeating the false equivalence meme a couple times. It pissed me off so I got on the AC360 LiveBlog and posted a biting note about making wild claims without citing examples. The blog is moderated and they did not post my message. But I didn't expect them to. Pffft.

9. Media idiots, if you're reading this, this is what you should say in such instances:
Edited on Fri Jul-23-10 12:56 AM by BurtWorm
We know your bosses won't allow you to say it's all the Republicans and right wingers who pull this shit, even though those are the facts. But you don't have to LIE and say "the left does it too." To satisfy your bosses AND speak the truth try this:

"Breitbart is a conservative Republican, but if he had been a liberal Democrat and pulled something like this, the same would hold true: He is a liar and a bully and his word can't be trusted."

Notice the fantasy tense (conditional) signaled by the word "if." This signals that you are constructing a fantasy--i.e., something not true--nevertheless, if it were true (which it isn't), the condition would hold.

Be faithful to the truth, media idiots. Fuck phony balance.
