McCain challenger Hayworth gets RW flak for battling sheriff
Nowicki: J.D. Hayworth faces fallout on Babeu
by Dan Nowicki, columnist - Jul. 25, 2010 12:00 AM
The Arizona Republic

U.S. Senate challenger J.D. Hayworth's attack on an Arizona lawman popular with Republican border-security hawks has generated some blowback to his campaign.

Hayworth last week demanded that incumbent Sen. John McCain, his GOP primary target, yank all television ads featuring Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu after Babeu made an appearance on a "pro-White" Tennessee-based radio program that once hosted former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

Babeu has acknowledged that going on the show was a mistake, and some supporters of Hayworth, including Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, are defending him.

"Sheriff Paul Babeu supports SB 1070 (Arizona's immigration law) and is against illegal immigration," Arpaio said in a written statement provided to The Arizona Republic by Tim Gaffney, Babeu's spokesman. "Paul is no more a racist than any good American who wants to secure our border and stop illegal immigration."

Feathered Bastard
Paul Babeu Interviewed by White Supremacist Radio Show, Flack Takes Responsibility
By Stephen Lemons, Tue., Jul. 20 2010 @ 3:02PM

With neo-Nazis regularly patrolling parts of Pinal County for illegal aliens and turning them over to the U.S. Border Patrol, this is the worst possible time for Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu to grant an interview to a well-known white supremacist radio show.

But that's exactly what Babeu did recently for a Tennessee-based program called The Political Cesspool, as was reported first by The Arizona Daily Star.

The show, which has long been condemned by the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center, bills itself as "pro-white" and lists as one of its principles, "to revive the White birthrate above replacement level fertility and beyond to grow the percentage of Whites in the world relative to other races."

In the past, the Cesspool has hosted such racist and anti-Semitic guests as ex-Klan leader David Duke, pro-segregation professor Virginia Abernethy, Holocaust denier Willis Carto, and and Canadian neo-Nazi Paul Fromm.

Regardless of his political motives, Hayworth has the facts right about Sheriff Babeu's disturbing lack of compunctions about appearing with white supremacists or other fringe media hosts.

According to Tim Gaffney, spokesman for the Sheriff's Office, neither he nor Babeu were aware that the Cesspool radio show was a White Nationalist program. But the show's regular host directly contradicted that statement:

Sheriff Paul Babeu is confused

Last week I posted an article of support for Pinal County (AZ) Sheriff Paul Babeu. Based upon his track record on the job, I stand by my words.

Unfortunately, as is the case with far too many elected officials, the gallant Sheriff Babeu has allowed himself to be put on the run by the limp wristed hacks of the liberal media. We were disappointed to read today that Babeu’s office has issued an apology of sorts.
<snip>

For Sheriff Babeu to change his mind and now regret coming on our show, for whatever reason, is his right. For him to act as though he had no idea of our ideology is a lie.

Eddie Miller spoke with the Sheriff personally, a week in advance of the interview, during which it was made specifically clear (so there could be no “confusion”) the nature of our paleoconservative radio program (which was mentioned several times by name) and some of the attacks we’ve sustained from hate groups like the ADL and SPLC.
That conversation was very positive and phone records can prove it took place. Our last conversation with the Sheriff’s office took place last night, just hours before the issuance of this press release, and it too, was positive. Never have we been told to distance ourselves from the Sheriff, quite the opposite, in fact.

Media Matters reported on Sheriff Babeu's appearance on another fringe radio program:

AZ Sheriff Babeu also appeared on 9-11 truther conspiracy show
July 20, 2010 6:16 pm ET by Eric Hananoki

As Media Matters noted, a spokesperson for Paul Babeu, the Sheriff of Pinal County, Arizona and frequent Fox News guest, issued an apology for allowing Babeu to appear on the white nationalist radio program Political Cesspool. The spokesperson added that he has been "inundated with media requests" and he "weeded out most all requests from any outlets or groups that have any connection with possible hate groups. Unfortunately last week it appears that I may have let one such interview take place."

The Political Cesspool isn't the only fringe program on which Babeu has recently appeared. On July 9, Babeu was a guest on The Alex Jones Show, a program considered the leading anti-government conspiracy theory program in the country, and hosted by the "founding father" of the movement that claims that 9-11 was an "inside job" by the government.

At one point during the program, while discussing the administration's policies toward Arizona and immigration, host Alex Jones asked Babeu if President Obama is committing "high treason," to which Babeu replied, "It borderlines that. I'm not going to outright call it that. ....

<snip>

On the program, Babeu additionally attacked Obama for planting "in people's heads that we're the thugs" and said he would "not forgive" Obama. Babeu later said that Obama has been "undermining not just the rule of law, but literally an assault upon police officers across America." Jones' website features a section for numerous conspiracy theories, which frequently involve the "police state" and "martial law"....

Hayworth may have shot his campaign in the foot. Many blog comments, while expressing disapproval of hate groups, also criticize Hayworth for taking on Sheriff Babeu. And many also say they can no longer vote for Hayworth because of it.
