Carolyn King stands in centerfield at Candy Cane Park, a Little League field tucked in the quiet neighborhood where she grew up in Ypsilanti. She forces a smile for the camera. She still has blond hair and a photogenic smile, but she is nervous and guarded. None of this ever came naturally to her.

In 1973, King became an accidental social activist, a 12-year-old girl thrust into the women’s liberation movement, even though she had never heard of such a thing.

She made the team, even though that was against the rules, even though Little League officials at national headquarters demanded that she be kicked off.

2. I remember that! She grew up in a town not far from me.
I was in 10th grade in 1973 and remember how amazed we all were by her bravery (and yes, back then it was a brave action).

4. Proof that things can change.
Thanks for posting this, BeatleBoot.

By the way, we watched a recent Paul McCartney concert on television and, lo and behold, he was sporting Beatle Boots. :)
