1. It's an apple with a worm in it

The skin still bright and shiny, looking beautiful and speaking of great wealth and goodness, but the inside destroyed and rotten.

It's a soap bubble, a shiny, iridescent skin, but nothing holding it up but hot air and a lot of wishful thinking that it will last forever.

It's a Hollywood stage front, a wild west town with every window bristling with guns, but nothing behind it but wooden bracing, desert and tumbleweeds.
