Why Oppose Immigration Regulation?

It seems that Democrats generally oppose immigration regulation. I don't see it as a party issue.
The US populaton is now about 310 million.
In 1960 it was about 181 million.

World population is also escalating.
6 billion in 1999
Expected to reach 7 billion in 2011

Resources are limited.

How can we sustain unlimited immigration?

Dems don't want reform. I doubt that there are many Dems who oppose immigration reform. What many (not all) oppose is legalized racial profiling, and the fact that few "reforms" have addressed one of the key problems-corporate greed-which leads to the enticing of workers through family networks.

I am a vocal critic of the exploitation of undocumented workers, both in terms of Arizona's law, but also by corporations, who are above the law.

And yes, resources are limited. But they're limited worldwide. Whether people are here or there is a matter of whether we have domestic problems or international ones. We will not escape climate change/declining resources...one way or another it will affect the US.

My Democratic friends oppose regulation. They say that we all came from immigrants and we need to be more accepting. "Give me your tired, your poor," and all that.

The way I see it, unregulated immigration leads to the exploitation of immigrants, and the low wages that they receive puts them in commpetion for work that legal people can do.

7. The Tip Of The Iceburg...

The ugly truth is the issue isn't "illegal immigration" as much as its racism against Hispanics...Mexicans in specific. There are Polish, Russian, Chinese and others in this country who get in via a green card and let them lapse but you rarely hear a peep about this being a problem. It's almost totally focused on Mexicans and a long seeded resentment that some in this country have against those who "look and speak funny". This is a Rove wedge issue that has been astroturfed into a forest.

What isn't discussed is what causes this immigration. It's the cheap labor on both sides of the border that expoits and demonizes these people. You won't get a true "reform" because there are too many Americans who need these people to pick their lettuce, flip the burgers, clean the pools and so on. Expelling all "illegals" (translation: Mexicans) would be an economic catastrophe for not just the southwest but the entire country.

If one wants to truly solve this problem, then there needs to be an accounting of those who profit from the cheap labor, but it's easier to focus on the racism that is purely emotional vs. the economic that is far more complicated.

8. OK, imagine this...

China is about the same size, physically, as the United States.
The U.S. has a little over 300 million people.
Take that, and add ONE BILLION more people to the east coast.
That is China.
I think we have room for a few more immigrants.

That being said, I don't see any Dems opposed to immigration regulation. I don't see anyone in favor of "unlimited" immigration. Nobody is opposed to the Arizona law because they want to see waves of illegal immigrants from Mexico, it's because it's a bad law that encourages xenophobia.

You're talking about something that is a much larger issue than just U.S. immigration policy. You're talking about the global population bomb. What do you propose we do about that?
