I finally realize that you can't post anything related to weight in GD
because there will inevitably be posts in that thread that degrade people because of their weight.

why? now that's a good question!

3. Did you go and call rush a fat ass drug addict again?
You should be ashamed of yourself!

Rush limbaugh can be degraded on so many levels.

Weight is simply the cheapest and easiest and therefore no challenge.

Drug addiction, sex with little boys, there is a virtual gold mine of reasons to attack the fat gas bag.

6. Fair enough, but I didn't learn this from any thread I started
just that whenever weight is somehow observable, no matter the story, that the discussion will end up getting several posts degrading someone for their weight.

kind of sad that we can't talk about an airplane seating situation without a teenaged girl being called fat (and worse things related to that) several times in the process.

5. Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that
you can't post anything related to insert anything on DU because someone will find a way to degrade someone about their insert anything? :)

Weight-related threads seem to be one of the handful of topics on which people fail to communicate around here - some posters seize the opportunity to be anonymous jerks, others (a smaller group) fling accusations of weight-bigotry willy-nilly, and the result is that nothing is ever read or discussed. I guess that on some topics it just becomes impossible to give anyone else the benefit of the doubt, or to think carefully about what is being read before launching a riposte...

8. good analysis
we can't have a discussion where weight is either the topic or observable in some way (e.g. a photo) without several predictable posts calling those people lazy, selfish, or any number of derogatory names.

perhaps the most troublesome are not the one off jibes, but the persistent posts defending calling someone lazy or a fat-a** or some such thing.

but they happen on every thread related to weight. kind of sad.

21. Persistent assholery is in a class of it it's own - it always boggles me when people
will post 5 or 6 times just to make sure that their insult is widely heard. Even worse, when it's persistent posts intended to deny someone else's experience or observations. It's fine to disagree on general concepts, but arguing about what someone else saw/heard/felt is just asinine...

24. when someone does that I always try to remember who they are
when their pet issue comes up, whatever it is, i try to remember the unfair and off-base things they said regarding people's weight and then accordingly assume they have no credibility on any other issue.

in other words, they become an enemy to the very causes they support here.

17. Just what I was going to say. Ugliness rears its head on so many issues...
Weight is a biggie, so is smoking, religion, voting or sitting it out. It seems that the only things most agree on are disdain for Repub talking heads, Fox, tea party protesters. So we have become our own worst nightmare---only agreeing on hatred. Kind of sad.

14. disparaging people because of their appearance
has always been allowed here much to my dismay. It isn't just weight, it's signs of aging, thinness, general unattractiveness, clothing, hair (or lack thereof), etc. For some reason, whenever anyone is disliked for any reason disparaging how they look is often included, and for some bizzare reason it's always been allowed here. Oddly enough, people are also disparged because of their looks when they look exceptionally good, particularly women.

"Why" is a good question.

19. Smokers, overweight people, etc, don't fit with the new liberal fundie model
Of how we should all be. You are a drain on resources relating to health care and you need to be sent to re-education camps. You are a drain on $$ and the new faith (as set down by peoples' personal 'bibles') and therefore you must be punished.

You think smokers were joking when they said the next thing people would be coming for were overweight folks? Nope - we saw it years ago. Nanny state folks will justify more power over people based on health.

Here are the simple steps:

1. Make as much noise as you can about studies showing how X is bad for your health.
2. Map that to $$ and health care
3. Raise taxes to make people conform to your choices
4. Rationalize it, like fundies do, by telling yourself and others it will save the children, money, and the lives of those who just are not smart enough to live like you do.

And there you have it - so called 'liberal' folks will jump on the fundie bandwagon, the same folks who yell 'Your body, your choice' on abortion will abandon that ideal in a split second for money and control. Time and again.

Real pro-choice people will stand up for it - but then we are called zealots, addicts, etc. I don't smoke pot, but I stand with those who do. I smoke cigs - but because I do anything I post in that regards is only because I am an addict (a quick out for those who have no real argument).

I have seen it all before. Overweight people are the next target - because once smoking is not seen as the #1 health issue, weight will be. So get ready to have a lot of people out there who want to save your soul and preach to you, and be ready for the religious wackos to impose their personal beliefs on you - all in the name of either religion or dollars.

Hypocrites, the lot of them.

23. It's because people like to be mean.
Everybody seems to be in a bad mood these days, and somehow being mean makes it all better. Well, not better, but it distracts from the grumpiness. Being an asshole sometimes salves the pain of what is making us act like an asshole. If it's not weight, it will be something else. It's to deflect from our own shortcomings.

Something like that.

I have taken care of so many people who found obesity to be their only comfort to protect them from a lot of physical and psychological pain....I probably take it too personally.
