...especially for spelling/grammar.
The National Center on Family Homelessness has released it's latest report.Texas rates 50th in the nation on homeless children.this is a silent shame that affects all of us,and it's time we educated ourselves and took action.
More than 337,105 children experience homelessness in any year.Of the 2,129,000 children living in poverty in Texas, four out of every twenty-five (16% ) are homeless.Forty-six percent of Texas’s children living in families with incomes below the poverty level are Hispanic, 40% are White, non-Hispanic, and 13% are Black, non-Hispanic.
Housing is critical for the well-being and growth of a child.A person making minimum wage would have to work 92 hours/week to afford a 2 bedroom apartment that cost $700/month. Two family members working at minimum wage would not be much better off.Even a seemingly minor event could throw these people on the street. An earned income tax credit for these employees would help.Texas does not provide these.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has reported that one in 20 of Texas’s households have very low food security, which means they have experienced hunger. The prevalence of very low food security in Texas is greater than the national average of one in 26. Households in poverty headed by single mothers are particularly susceptible to this. When these households become homeless, they represent the extreme end of the food insecurity range in Texas.56% of eligible people have food stamps at this time.
Compared to middle-income families, homeless families in Texas suffer proportionately more moderate to severe health problems, including asthma, traumatic stress, and emotional disturbances.Homeless children are susceptible to Post-traumatic stress syndrome at an alarming rate-one in six.Approximately 21.8% of children in Texas are uninsured, compared to about 10% nationally.
I could go on,but I hope you get the point. In a state who claims to be so child-friendly,how can this exist?
I encourage you to read the facts for yourself at The National Center on Family Homelessness website
