A question for those knowledgeable about closed adoptions and the bad old days
Edited on Mon Aug-02-10 06:24 PM by me b zola
I was given a brief biography of my birth families with my adoption paperwork. It stated that my birth mom was 18 years old and in tenth grade of high school. Minus her time being hidden away during her pregnancy, this still would have made her a year behind in her education. I always questioned that. As some of you know I recently found my paternal birth family. Yeah, b-dad is an ass and isn't assisting in me finding my b-mother, but whatever. My paternal aunt, OTOH, is doing what she can. She remembers seeing my bmom and strongly believes that she was younger than eighteen.

So today I was perusing youtube for others who are seeking, and I found another adoptee who was told that her bmom was 18 years old and in tenth grade. So my question for anyone with knowledge of the legal side of adoptions, could it be that agencies lie about the age of the mother relinquishing custody for legal purposes?

1. Good guess
If the mother was under 18, she would not be able to sign a binding agreement, such as a termination of parental rights.
I think you figured it out. I'm sorry to hear of the difficulties you've encountered.

3. Thank you for your kind response
If the adoption agency lied in their legal filings, would this give me legal recourse to have my original birth certificate opened to me?

2. Even today anything can be in the "so-called" non identifying info.
There usually are some true facts there, also... I would assume 2+ years either way if her birth date is what you are concerned about.

7. I know a woman who had a lie on her disclosure
Her birth mother had a son before her, kept him and this was not disclosed in the info given to her adoptive parents. She found out later when her records were opened and contacted her birth mother. She is lucky to have been adopted in a state where she simply filed a request with district court, a judge approved and she got the information.

I wish you the best of luck with your search. I was adopted and it was good to make contact with my birth family.

10. Not an expert on adoption but I do have a December birthday
and was 18 for over half of my senior year. Now, add in a pregnancy that costs you a school year as it would back in the old days you would have me be 18 in my junior year. Now say I flunked English, and I might be in a 10th grade HR even if I otherwise would be a junior. That doesn't seem completely out of line. If she had an August birthday and was held so she started school at age 5 instead of 4 it works out even better.
